Geneva is a big and fairly modern city and if honest after a few hours of wandering around we were still trying to 'get the place'. Even though Switzerland has been visited numerous times a visit to Bern, the capital city, has eluded me until now. Being just an hour from Lucerne by train it was an easy trip to make and the central station places you right at the head of the historic Marktgasse that is the main thoroughfare of the old city area. When I first started working for the railways in the UK there was always an advert within Railnews (which was really the British Rail monthly newspaper) saying "Visit Interlaken" and Heather remembered similar adverts from when she started work on the railway too. Lucerne was pretty much chosen as a good central location for us to visit Interlaken, Bern and also it was well placed for us to get to Geneva for our flight home to the UK. It is a very nice place in its own right with pleasant walks available along the lakeside or through the old town area. Below are some photographs from our time in the city.

Between mid-April and and the end of May/early June the resort towns of Davos, Klosters and St Moritz seem to pretty much close down for the 'Off Season'. This spring time gap between their winter and summer season however coincided with our trip to Switzerland . . . . maybe a little more research would have been wise?
