Flying from Luton at 21.05 with Wizzair meant a late night or, more correctly, an early morning arrival into the city of Gdansk. The taxi from the airport was certainly 'fast' and we were soon checking into the Hotel Królewski that overlooks the historical waterfront area of the city. It was nice to arrive in Lublin after ten hours of travelling and be able to see a new city for both Heather and I. We had three nights staying here as we wanted to not only see the city itself but also travel out to Zamosc. The railway station was a bit of a walk from the central area, but after the long journey by train it was nice to stretch the legs. Our hotel - Vanilla Hotel - was located on the main pedestrianised street in the city which gave easy acces...

The journey to Zakopane involved a fifteen minute 'rail replacement' bus service. Unlike in the UK, where health and safety are king, in Poland we wandered through a road works site to get on the bus and then clambered over the ballast and tracks to rejoin the waiting train. Once checked into our hotel and after a bit of unpacking there was a smell of smoke and the sound of emergency services close by. Looking out if the hotel window the fire brigade were busy...

Wieliczka (Veel-litch-ka) is located about 15km from the centre of Krakow, I am not sure why but I always thought it was further away and difficult to get to by public transport. I was so mistaken - there are two trains an hour from the main station in Krakow and it costs just 3.50 Polish Zloty (or about 75p) to make the journey. The train also connects Wieliczka with Krakow Airport! Wieliczka is home to the famous Salt Mines which have, over hundreds of year...
