The good thing about picking up a cheap flight is that sometimes you end up somewhere very pleasant. Rzeszow, I think, was pretty much one of those places. This small city is not really on the tourist trail and after Krakow it was night to be away from the maddening crowds.
Our journey from Krakow to Rzeszow, a distance of just over one hundred miles, look nearly four hours by train. There were a number of long stops en-route as a result of the complete route modernisation of the railway between the two places that is currently underway and lots of single line running. The long journey time did however let us sample the restaurant car on the train where the freshly cooked pork schnitzel was washed down with a couple of beers as the train trundled on its merry way. There are some distinct advantages to a much slower pace of travel!
The attractive old town centre of Rzeszow does not have the 'wow factor' of Krakow but it is a nice place and it seems far more Polish as a result of it not being part of the grand tourist trail.
We had drinks in a local bar/restaurant to initially shelter from the rain (honest) before heading to the town brewery for what was some super food and of course a beer or two - it would be rude not to at least try the local brew. Foolishly, some may add, we also had one or two vodka shots which set us up for a trip to a live music venue and bottle of cherry vodka to share with five shot glasses. Can you have too much vodka at prices like this? I doubt it!
Our flight back to the UK was fairly early on the Sunday morning with Ryanair getting to Manchester at lunchtime on the Sunday. Overall I think Poland was a hit for 'the cheeky boys' and hopefully we can make a return visit to this country in the future.
