Holtyboy's Travel Blog
I do like a whirlwind trip and with just ninety minutes in Edinburgh it was going to be a tall order to do it justice - but I did try! Having travelled from Derby on the 0713 CrossCountry service to York I then had just over a five minute connection onto the 0855 Virgin East Coast service to Edinburgh. This had me arriving a couple of minutes early at 1120 in the scottish capital giving me a whole 91 minutes before I headed south via the West Coast Main Line to Crewe and a connection back to Derby. Nine minutes at Crewe however is enough for anyone! A quick walk through the Princes Street Gardens, a view of the Scott memorial a look at the shops on Princes Street itself was first on the cards. That enabled me to view the castle from afar before walking the long way around the back of the castle onto the famous Royal Mile. They were busy setting up for the Edinburgh Military Tattoo at the castle itself. This is maybe something worth seeing in the future? Walking down the mile there was time for a quick look at the Malt Whisky centre and to enable me to pop into a pub for a swift pint of Belhaven IPA and a whisky chaser before getting back to Waverley station with eleven minutes to spare . . . . I probably could have made it to Holyrood Palace if it was not for having that beer. Even though there was a bit of a queue I did have time to pick up a sandwich at M&S before taking my seat on the train back to England. Not bad for an hour and a half. I wonder where I will go next week? Any suggestions would be welcomed . . . . .
