Today we had arranged to do a "tablelands and waterfalls adventure" tour which would mean we would get to see some of the rainforest and do some wildlife spotting. We were not disappointed.
We were collected from the hostel and bundled into a minivan at 7:05am and greeted by our friendly guide for the day. First things first, we had to all sign disclaimers to say that if we were eaten by crocs, bitten by snakes, fell from a waterfall etc. Then the tour company were in no was responsible, a little daunting at that time of the morning however Peter assured us that should we have to be rescued from platypuses he would be right there.
Next stop just in the centre of cairns where we pulled up in a carpark and had to show a guys sat at a card table with a dog either our money for our tickets, this seemed a little odd but the tour was relatively cheap and if they keep the cost down by having a pop up office stored in the back of a car then tmi have no problem with that!
En route to our destination we passes through one of the wettest towns in Australia, this place had the normal rainfall that London has in a year, in half an hour!
First stop a place called devils pool, sounds inviting! Perhaps not.....the aborginals believe that the spirit of a woman named Alani, lover was killed after the pair fled the tribe to be together. Her tears after his death created the river which she then drowned in. Her spirit is said to be in the river and calls young men in. There has been many drownings at this spot, we were told that during the seventies it was a popular hippy hangout and one month there were 14 deaths.
We walked around and when we returned we were welcomed with bacon and egg sarnies which Pete had made.
The next place we stopped was some pretty cool waterfalls with natural rock slides! We were instructed by Peter to take extra care climbing to the top and to go down on our bums. Well, I was pretty nervous about this as were Katie and Ollie however we agreed that we are only here once so just went for it! We. Went down together and it was really fun! Was pleased I did it.
Before we jumped back on the minibus we used the public loos. Once driving down the road Peter told us that there was a chap arrested last month for camping underneath the ladies with some camera equipment!
Next stop, the beautiful waterfalls where Peter Andre filmed the video for mysterious girl! It was quite a sight and safe to swim in so in we went, it was freezing! But still amazing, and seriously gorgeous to look at.
We stopped at a billabong to spot crocs and managed to see one looking pretty menacing at the waters edge. We made another stop at a rainforest walk which had a viewing platform for turtle spotting, and we saw quite a few.
We were told to be very careful while walking through as there was a plant known as the stinging tree which can be very dangerous. This is a relation of the stinging nettle we have back home. If the brushes on your skin it will cause excruciating pain and this pain will reoccur for the next 3-6months! Peter told us there was a British guy making a tv show where he got stung and bitten by the worst things in the world, and he had done the tree. We later found it on YouTube and it looks seriously painful, we were extremely careful!
During the day we also spotted a tree kangaroo and a platypus! Peter told us to see all these in one day was really quite remarkable.
A great day :)
Over and out
