We finally left Page, AZ today and headed to Springdale, UT, just a mere 113 miles away. After traveling over 300 miles per day most days before, a couple hour drive would seem like nothing.
The drive to the campground would have us cross the National Park from the East entrance to the South and out of the park into the town of Springdale. Even though it was not a lot of miles to cover, the drive would be slow through the park. Also the park has two tunnels and one of them requires a permit for large vehicles and there is a wait to cross it since they have to close it to incoming traffic to allow us to drive through the center of the tunnel.
This drive also had special significance. After traveling over 2,000 miles I finally was able to add one new state to my list of states visited. Utah makes state number 42 for me and it is gorgeous so far.
As soon as we got into Utah we were surrounded by spectacular views. Even the red pavement compliments the views around it.
We passed the East entrance where the ranger kindly checked that we had reservations to spare us the unnecessary drive since all campgrounds were booked solid. We learned while checking into our campground everything in the area has been booked since mid March.
Our campground was right next to the Virgin river with access to float and the water levels were perfect. Since the young people were not coming, I thought the old crowd would not want to do that so I never got our floating tubes, but I was wrong. We walked to the nearest store to see if we could find some, but there was only one left and it was not that good and we did not think it was worth the money. Instead we walked down to the river and stepped in to try the water, it was cool and refreshing. I regret not bringing river tubes and will not make that mistake ever again.
We took advantage of the town shuttle and headed down the main street to explore the town and find a restaurant for dinner.
Tomorrow we will take the town shuttle to the park shuttle and explore the park.
