We were up early today to head to the National Battlefield Park. The main point of the park is to retell the story of the deciding battle of the Civil War.
After watching the movie in the Visitor Center we got our bikes to tour the park. I thought the south is flat, but oh my, this town is on a bluff and the park road is full of steep hills.
Gil documented what happened extensively on Facebook. We were separated - He went ahead of me on a hill and when I got to the stop a car was blocking the bike and I did not see Gil either so I thought he had gone ahead so I went on. I then made a wrong turn and by the time I realized I had gone the wrong way I was too far off. I had come up and down a couple of really steep hills. I kept hoping I was heading in the right direction. I finally realized I ended up in the other entrance of the park. I was a long way from the visitor center to try to back track, it would take me a long time. I went up to the ranger station hoping to be able to call Gil. I thought he would be able to get back to the RV and come around the streets and pick me up. There was no park ranger there, I got a little distressed for a few minutes and managed to get up the guts to ask for help. I stopped a van and asked for help. 3 Dutch guys on a road trip gave me a ride back to the Visitor Center.
Once there I was able to get my phone - call Gil and he then got a ride back with the Park Ranger who was out looking for me. I actually saw more of the park than Gil did, he was worried going around in circles looking for me. We will just have to come back another time.
We left the park and after a stop for lunch we headed toward the Natchez Trace Parkway. We made it to Mt Locust as it was closing. We finished the drive on the Natchez and arrived in Vidalia, LA around 5:30.
The campground is really nice. It has a good size pool and hot tub and they were having a pool party from 6-9 selling dinner for $5 and a band playing oldies. The laundry room was right next to the pool, so I did laundry while sitting in the hot tub and listening to music.
The drive through the Natchez was peaceful and scenic. If we find ourselves one day driving through it again we will have to stop in the places we missed this time.
Tomorrow we explore the city of Natchez
