Today is Monday Labor Day. We wanted to rent a car to get around to see some sites in Natchez. We arrived yesterday but I knew we could not pick one up because the local car rental company is closed on Sundays. I saw there are a couple of city tour options so I decided not to worry about it and figure it out once we were here. I called this morning and Enterprise is closed today also. I know it's a holiday, but how does a car rental company make money when they are closed on days people actually need cars?!
There are a couple of options for tours around Natchez. We would have to call a cab (no Uber) to get to the Visitor Center where the tours leave from, however they actually do not go to most of the sites I had marked as possibilities to visit. I saw in the laundry room an ad for a lady that does tours. I called her but she is booked all day.
The Natchez Visitor Center is in the same building as the Natchez National Historic site. We decided to go to the VC in the RV, visit the National Park and then leave from there. Pastor Harlin has invited us to visit them and boondock at his house. We called them up and they are free so we are going to head to his house today.
I noticed as we were getting ready that there are a lot of RVs leaving. When I went to the CG office to let them know we were leaving they asked if it was because of the storm. Storm? What Storm? I normally check the weather every morning especially on travel days, but I had not done that this morning. It turns out there is a tropical storm with the possibility of turning into a hurricane heading for the Gulf. New Orleans and Natchez are in the projected path. No wonder people are leaving. I was questioning my decision to leave instead of sightseeing and coming back to the RV park, but now I knew we were doing the right thing.
We went to the VC . We watched the movie and visited the museum. After that we headed out on foot to tour the rest of the Natchez Historic Park sites. The sites were within walking distance of the VC. On the way back we stopped at a shop that Gil saw was advertised at the Visitor Center. It had a lot of local home made goods. They had samples, we tried a few and ended up buying some delicious jams.
We ate lunch in the RV and then we headed out to Pastor Harlin's house just north of New Orleans. Natchez is a small city full of history and the RV park we stayed in LA across the Mississippi was very nice. Sites were level and spacious. The park was well maintained. It is right on the river shore with a nice view and walking path. I would not mind coming back in the future and using it as a base camp to visit some of the sites we missed.
We arrived at Pastor's house just before 6PM. We went to dinner and then came home to get updates on the hurricane path. Gil is convinced we should head home in the morning. More to come...
