well.. what can we say...
Our first choice was Point Samson but hitting Karratha / Dampier during school holidays wasn't so well planned!.. Roebourne "Harding River Caravan Park" it is... now a pleasant enough spot, I somehow thing though that the Harding River has not flowed through town for quite some time (Years I would think) so fishing wasn't going to be on the cards
The park was old and mostly permanents but wasn't certainly clean enough (could have used a plumber to fix all the leaking taps / showers though) and yehhhhhhhhhhhhhh the water was HOT..
From Roebourne we did a few day trips, here for 3 nights we spent our first afternoon checking out Point Samson and their famous fish and chips, which were yummy!... now not wanting to sound racist but bet you can't guess the nationality of the fish and chip shop owners :) and no they weren't italian lol
The beaches up here were a little disappointing but then again I don't know what I expected. The sand was more dirt and if it's one thing I'm almost over this trip it's the red dirt (constantly amazed at the places you find that stuff!)
The next morning we were set for a big day.. up to Harding Dam, now that was a surprise, not what we expected. Great maintained picnic area's, spotless toilets, free gas bbq's not to mention a spectacular view from the top of the dam wall.
From here into town for a quick tour of the old Gaol which doubles as the visitors centre, where Jacob fell in love with Red Dog.. (took him a whole 2 days to read the book!!)
Now for those that knew me growing up... and those that know Jacob he is becoming more and more his mother every day... he has discovered my eReader!!! now high on his list of "things for Santa" he has read the first two Harry Potter books since leaving home, add in Red Dog and various other small books along the way, quite the book worm in the making!
Out to the historic town of Cossack (Population 2).. if you don't do anything else in this part of the world it's definitely worth a visit to Cossack the history and the buildings are truly amazing..
Day 2 into Karratha and yep.. it's a big mining town pretty much enough said lol...
Dampier pretty run down (considering the ABC told us it's the richest town in Australia) but it was obvious there was lots going on. The boys had the opportunity to play on the oval we hear so much about from the Heath boys... and got to kick the footy on the home of the Dampier Sharks... photo's included later... The kids posed with Red Dog and then we visited the local visitors centre run by the LPG joint venture group.. what a world of information and the woman running it was awesome.. she gave the kids quiz sheets that they answered by touring the facility and watching a short movie on how they mine gas in the north west they were rewarded with a pencil case and pencils which although something small they were super excited about!
Back to base.. time to move camp again.. off to Millstream and the bush.. huge smiles!
