Now we've heard various things in our travels about Barn Hill Station not being up to scratch since the cyclone with the beaches being washed away etc so we have decided that we will risk a change and go and stay at Port Smith Caravan Park. This is about 160km south of Broome rumoured to be good for fishing..
First impressions... service plus.. what they lack in quality they certainly make up for in providing a friendly service. We were put in the overflow which we expected being school holidays but we were directed in by the owner Rob who couldn't have been more friendly. Pointed out where everything was with his very unique sense of humor (toilets are all ensuites, no boys or girls.. shower with who ever you choose!) we were put next to the tent area where we had free access to their bbq's and a camp kitchen with hot running water!.. and promptly invited to Sunday Morning's free Pancake cook up!
The park is set back off the beach but a quick drive saw us amongst the mangroves at low tide and pop had his rod out quickly... before long he had a yellow fin brim and a couple of whiting.. alas that was all that wanted to play..
Now to give you a heads up.. there is a local secret here about dealing with sand flies.. they were all nice enough to let us in on it AFTER we were eaten alive (which you don't feel btw until after the event).. their big secret.... DON'T GET BITTEN.. geez thanks! Jacob and I are covered in them literally and itch is not the word for it.. we broke out the polaramine in the end to get some sleep :(
Mark managed to get in Rob's ear (sometime after the yummy pancakes) and we decided to set off for a bit of an adventure to see if we could find some open beach without mangroves to cast a line.. everyone in the car (much to Nan's digust again through dirt tracks and sand dunes!) set up on the beach and bang.. Mark lands his first Thredfin Salmon... Pop lands a couple more yellow fin brim and everyone (including me) - excluding Nan.. catches a whiting (mine had to be thrown back ... insert sob!!) Fish for dinner yehhhhhhhhhhh
So other than the sand fly bites we all liked Port Smith and would probably return there again in the future (with sand fly knowledge onboard)
Off to Cape Keraudren
