Now I have never been to this part of the world but Nan & Pop were here with Mark & Aaron were around 4 / 8 years old.... the road in was purely a rail access road and the facilities were zip!... although Pop does recall the station running a Sunday Session for the locals and anyone that happened to be around.
We chose the long way round for Nan's benefit. The two options were all gravel from Roebourne or go down to Karratha and do the first 90km on bitumen, so bitumen it was!... Roads how ever were exceptionally good and we assume that is a benefit of the roads also being used by all the mining companies.
Set up camp in the main campground as they had hot running water in the camp kitchen and was close to the main station visitor centre. Huge credit to the camp hosts that were running the place at the time, we couldn't have asked for friendlier people and better maintained facilities. Everything was spotless! ... and I mean spotless.. the camp kitchen was better set up than most back yard outdoor kitchens I've seen!... We had a couple of visits from the camp hosts over the next couple of days. The woman (can't remember her name sorry) was wonderful with the boys... bought them a keep Australia Beautiful pack which was complete with a set of tongs and gardening gloves!!.. and later came back with some Kimberley Palm seeds and then discussed with the boys that the local aboriginal children used to use them as marbles if they were boys and the girls would paint them and turn them into beaded necklaces etc... soooooooooo our boys then spent the next hour or so on the floor playing marbles!..
Lots of walking the information centre and walk around the station was superb and a credit to the people that established it. The grounds are beautifully maintained and we could have easily stayed longer.
Our only full day at Millstream we hit the road and visited all the other camp sites (insert moan from Nan at a fair bit of gravel road driving).. oooooooooooooooo creek bed crossing... Mark gets his boots off and tests the water... much to the boys disappointment it's not even ankle deep and we head across... Now I think it's a great idea to stop Pop on the bridge and take a pic of the X-trail doing a creek crossing (well puddle crossing really) but apparently that wasn't not a great idea as I copped a mouthful from Nan for making them stop in that dangerous spot!..insert giggle and more screams from Nan!
We checked out Crossing Pool, Deep Reach Pool, Python Pool and Mount Herbert...
Highlight of the day, we go the heads up from a group that we seemed to be trailing on our travels that if we ventured about a 1km further on from Python Pool on the left we would find a gravel pit (yes Nadia a gravel pit) if we drove through it and down a track on the far side we would find some Aboriginal Rock Art... and that we did tucked away (obviously not a huge secret with the well worn track) but few enough visitors that it was in brillian condition and well worth the 2-3km detour (some men are useless) to find them.
Bush baths for the second night in a row and get ready to pack up for Onlsow...
