Friday 29th June we left Niagara Falls for the flight back to New York, arriving around 3pm with enough time to check into our hotel and await the arrival of Steve and Chelle, our close friends from Brisbane. This time last year Steve and Chelle visited New York with their gorgeous Wife and Mum, Anne Maree. She was my closest friend, and in February this year, she passed away very unexpectedly from breast cancer. We miss her so very much. She would however have wanted Steve and Chelle to have the best time on this trip. I think we hit the mark on day one my dear!
Steve and Chelle, experienced at New York shopping are also going to teach me how to shop and I had my first lesson on Saturday 30 June - more on that a little later.
After greeting them around 7.30pm, I fully expected that they would head for bed but not those two. All they needed was 15 minutes and we were out the door again heading for an Italian restaurant on 45th Sreet for pizza and pasta. Chelle and Oli devoured 2 pizzas, Chelle ordering the largest pizza I have ever seen. It was then off for a walk around Times Square at night which Oli and I hadn't experienced. It is even more vibrant at night with even more people and you get the full affects of the lights and bill boards. A leisurely stroll back to the hotel and time for bed.
We met in the foyer of our hotel at 7.45am on Saturday morning, sensible shoes on, ready for shopping and that we did, although I hate to admit, Oli and I came home around 4pm leaving Chelle and Steve shopping on 5th avenue - they didn't get home until after 6!
Firstly we headed to the Soho area as that is the best place to buy shoes (I am talking converse, vans and fancy sand shoes). Soho is also the home to Dean and Deluca, a fantastic New York style Deli, gourmet grocery store. For those of you who know Rosalie Deli -imagine that only 100 times bigger. We headed here for coffee and breakfast and could have stayed all day. We shopped, ate croissant and fresh dough-nuts and had great coffee. Right it was now time to shop - out to the street we went and we were off - BUT the shops didn't open til 10 and it was only 8.30 am! So we headed to the next area which is Little Italy and visited some amazing delis and interesting shops, stopping at a famous Italian ice-cream place (which was airconditioned) and sat down to ice-cream at 9.30am. Kids were in heaven.
A bit more exploring of all the little shops and things were defintely starting to liven up so we headed back to Soho and a little surf shop called Saturdays. It also has great coffee.
After that, the shops were defintely open and we had lots of shoes to buy for us and others so off we went. I think between us we ended up with about 6-7 pairs of shoes. Oli is now the proud owner of his first pair of Vans and also some amazing Reeboks which he proudly wore all day (thank goodness as the others are ready for the rubbish).
We visited many other shops and then it was time for a rest stop at Bloomingdales for me, Chelle and Oli but not Steve who headed off to the Pink shop and happened on a huge Alessi shop on the way.
Off to Eataly for lunch but it was way too crowded to properly enjoy so we have put that on our list for an early visit one day. Out to the street we went and happend on a huge Marimekko store where I managed to get a great table cloth for my extendedable table at home and Steve got some cushion covers for Kirra. I was totally done after this so we all jumped in a taxi and Oli and I dropped Chelle and Steve off on 5th avenue and we headed for home and a rest. Oh my poor feet!!!
After a recharge of the batteries we all went off to the Rockefeller Centre for some more shopping and then back to an all American Diner for dinner - huge cheese burgers and crumbed chicken - yum!
After a brief planning session about Sunday's schedule it was off to bed for everyone where I was out like a light!
Sunday we plan to take a trip on the Statten Island ferry early in the morning and then more shopping!
Tomorrow we are off to Woodbury Common a famous outlet shopping store and you guessed it more shopping!
Until tomorrow, take care.
