Sunday in New York and we woke to a beautiful day blue skies and quite warm. Off to our breakfast spot Dean and Deluca for coffee and a pastry where we dawdled a bit too long so bolted for the 8.30 Staten Island ferry - and missed it by 3 minutes!! The next one wasn't for an hour so we wandered over to Battery Park and took some photos at the eternal flame. This is a temporary monument to all those who lost their lives in 9/11. The globe actually stood between the two world trade centres and was damaged in the attacks. There are plans to transfer it back to the site once rebuilding has finished.
Onto the Staten Island ferry which is a free ferry service to Staten Island (a 10.5 mile round trip) which goes straight past the statue of liberty. You also get a great view of the Manhattan skyline. It was a lovely way to spend a Sunday morning. So where too next?? Off across the famous Brooklyn Bridge to Jane's carousel which is at DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) a gorgeous spot on the Hudson river foreshaw with fantastic views back across Manhattan. Chelle and I indulged ourselves to a ride on the beautifully restored carousel, originally built in 1923 and restored by a Brookly artist.
It was then off to Grimaldi's for Pizza. This place had been recommended by Steve's Italian godmother and it was superb. We got ther about 45 minutes before opening and were second in the queue. It was stinking hot and thank goodness for a great big oak tree that we were able to stand under. By the time it opened at noon the queue was over 100 people long. We were second in the door and eating our pizzas within 10 minutes. Check out our before and after photos. Steve and I indulged in a Brooklyn lager with ours - only 1 but I could have had more it was lovely and cold.
We waddled out of Grimaldis and it was back across the Brooklyn bridge to Colombus Circle for coffee before heading off on a leisurely stroll down 5th avenue where of course we had to stop off at Tiffanys. One can't shop at Tiffanys on 5th avenue without buying something so Steve, Chelle and I all came away with little blue bags. Oli decided to sit down and wait for us but he didn't think he would have to wait for 45 minutes so by the time I got back to him he was ready to head out the door and walk 12 blocks back to our hotel - he thought we had desserted him and was insistent he knew his way around NY well enough to get back there!!
We tried for tickets for Mamma Mia with no luck and then it was back to the hotel for a lie down - oh my poor poor feet.
After a rest we were ready to go again and off we went down to village to a restaurant that had been recommended to Steve called Sushi Mamba. It served Japanese, Brazillian and Peruvian food. It was sooooooooo good. A stroll outside found the best Italian gelatto place and a lovely bohemian type atmosphere. We were just about to hop in a taxi for home when Steve came across a second gelatto place which served them in the shape of iceblocks and there he had his second dessert for the night.
I literally was asleep before my head hit the pillow and we discovered we had been out and about in 38 degree heat in NYC!!
Tomorrow we are off to Woodbury, the famous outlet store on the outskirts of New York. I am taking my suitcase on wheels for all of my purchases. I think the other 3 say they will disown me if I do. We will see who is smiling at the end of the day!!!!
I am sure it won't be our feet.
Until tomorrow, take care.
