After a week of camping at Bjelke Peterson Dam near Murgon, catching Redclaw and experiencing the true sense of free camp, where we had no power and relied just on solar and the generator and gas for the fridge and hot water, we are now back on the coast in Bargara, 15 mins out of Bundaberg and only 2 kms from Mon Repos where the turtles come in to lay their eggs and tourist flock to watch the spectacle. Our van is right across from the beach and we found a nest today so will head down after dark to watch the hatchlings come out.
We headed out for another eggs Benedict at a place called Salt on the main road of Bagara, I rate this one an 8 out of ten. The coffee was awesome and they must source a milder brand of hollandaise, but was great eating all the same and the view is to die for.
We decided we had to complete the tourist attractions of Bundaberg Ginger Beer factory and the Bundaberg Rum factory tour. So here's what happened.
The ginger beer tour was a self guided tour with a personal hand held tour guide that took you through the many rooms with displays and interactive activities. Not bad and you got to try all there 16 flavours at the end. The most soft drink I've drunk in 20 years I reckon. Was a great experience and well worth the visit.
We next went to the Bundaberg Rum Factory for the guided tour, this was awesome. We got to go through the entire process which is fully automated and controlled by computers believe it or not.
We tasted the molasses and got to sample the end product, twice....A must see and do even if you don't like rum. We bought a few presents and a keepsake for us.
So we decided it was time for a beer at Bargara Hotel. A ten minute walk from where we are staying. And let's just say that since we arrived we've been told to think back 20 years and that's what Bundy is like... And they're right. It's like stepping back in time to when life was less complicated and slow paced. It's hard to relax and adapt to this lifestyle, we won't rush back to the pub. Gunna save a fortune on this trip.
Anyway were here for a month as we are house sitting for our friends whilst they travel to Victoria for a month, so not sure what will happen in that time. Might get some work if we can be bothered, or we might wait till they get back and we hit the road again.
We're waiting for the wet season to pass up north before we go any further. Keep an eye out , I'll blog again when we get moving.
