We travelled inland from Bundaberg about 3 hours through lush green mountainous farming country, towards the town of Murgon. We had a lunch break in the quaint little town called Goomeri where they have a pumpkin festival in May that closes the streets with thousands of people coming from all over the state, the rest of the year the shops are all closed except for the food works and service stations. Had a quick sausage roll then we were on our way again to the dam.
Once we reached our camp site which is unpowered but sits right on the edge of the dam we quickly set up and were greeted by a cheeky parrot that decided we should feed him. I was able to hand feed this beautiful wild bird. It was amazing.
It was then time to go and set some pots to try and catch some redclaw.
This had to be seen to be believed. Funniest thing ever, Our friend who is camping with us has a kayak with an outboard motor on it, he drove while John attempted to stay afloat above the water line whilst sitting in the front. We thought the kayak was going to sink as they tried to set the pots. Check out the photos of them coming back in, John had to lay down to try and even the weight and in doing so had waves crashing over the bow and his head. He was soaked when they got back whilst we all roared with laughter.
We got the fire cranking, to warm everyone up. Yes a fire in the middle of summer at inland Queensland..... Who'd of thought we'd be wearing jumpers and sitting round the fire, it was awesome. What a way to spend a week.
The next morning we check the pots and had about 19 redclaw. Yippee. We'll have those with some garlic on the BBQ tonight, apparently that's a small catch but we were happy.
Next I thought I'd try my hand at fresh water fishing for Yellow Belly as I found a pippie on the shore, well I still suck at fishing. I tried the bait first then a lure and only managed to get some weed, a rock and a stick.... I'll try again tomorrow with some proper bait that I bought from the kiosk.
This is a beautiful spot to stay. So quiet and relaxing. I wonder what everyone else is doing at the moment. Hard at work. I'm thinking of you.... Any way I'm sure there'll be more antics throughout the week. I'll keep you posted.
