So we've got our bearings in Bundaberg and as we're staying here for a while I'll post about the rum factory a bit later on. There's sugar cane fields everywhere and a small port for the cargo ships to come in and cart it all away.these cargo ships are the same size that come into the port of Newcastle. Hard to believe. Such a pretty place and so layed back. It's as if we've gone back in time 20 years. No one is rushing about you just cruise along without a care in the world. More about Bundy later.
Today we went for a drive to a beautiful place called Burrum Heads. Tiny little seaside town right on the ocean about 40 mins South of Bundy. A great spot to relax and unwind. We met up with another novacastrian who had moved up here about a year ago. Can't believe the amount of Newcastle people who live up here. It's starting to get a bit weird, any way we made our way to Hervey Bay from there for lunch at the boat club right at the marina where you board all the cruise boats out to Fraser Island and the reef. As we drove down the esplanade we stopped to have a look at the long jetty, just across the road from Famous shark museum. That's one long bloody jetty....we weren't walking it today. Had to get to the boat club for lunch. Top spot. Good prices. They had tropical fish and live coral in the fish tanks at the entrance. Has enticed us to start doing some snorkelling. What a beautiful spot but full of retirees.... They know the good spots, definitely worth a visit. On the way home we stopped at Childers, yes where they had the fire in the back packers hostel many years ago, and had the most amazing home made ice cream from Mammino. It's just past the Snake farm off the Bruce Hwy. Best ice cream you will ever have. John had mango and of course I had chocolate. This stuff doesn't melt. It's bizarre. We stopped on the way down and got some fresh lychees for $2.50 and on the way back got four watermelons for $5.00. Yes whole watermelons. The fresh produce around here, including seafood is so cheap, the farmers sell the stuff the big supermarkets don't won't on road side stalls at ridiculously cheap prices. It's a food lovers paradise. We paid $15 for a kilo of mixed tiger and what they call medium river prawns. Bloody beautiful. Paid nearly $45 a kilo for the same thing at Xmas. What a blow out. Was great day and got to see a bit more of the area. We're off to the markets tomorrow. Can't wait to see this.... I'm sure the prices will be mind blowing. Check out the photos to see where we were today. Love it up here.
