We finally got to go to Mon Repos to see the Loggerhead Sea turtle hatchlings emerge out of the sand and make their way to the ocean where only 1 in 1000 will reach full maturity. What a great night. We lined up out the front of the information centre at 6.45pm and were quickly sorted into three groups and told to wait until the ranger called your group. They patrol the beach looking for activity then bring the groups down to watch. The information centre was interesting and outlined the history of the Loggerhead from when they were killed for Turtle soup... Oooooo... To being a protected animal.
We only edited 15 mins when We were quickly ushered to the boardwalk, as the hatchlings had started emerging. It was a beautiful clear night and the moon lit up the beach like it was day. The waves were crashing and this amazing spectacle had started as the temperature had dropped just enough. The little ones took a while to come out, they usually get about 120 emerging like popcorn but our hatch was pretty slow. They must have Been sleeping still. The Rangers explained the cycle of life as they collected them up ready to release. They drew a line in the sand leading to the ocean and asked us to form two lines down the beach where they placed individuals with headlamps in the middle for the turtles to pass through the light and they looked down to watch. All of sudden another group on the beach stopped as another lot of hatchlings had emerged that know one knew about and were heading for our lights.... How cool is nature... We all froze so we didn't step on the tiny creatures and allowed them to enter the Water. This is a must do on everyone's bucket list! The season is from December to March. Check out the sneaky photos I wasn't suppose to take. You only get one photo op. Naughty me
