So yes, the first stop was Kashmir! I know we said we weren't going to go there as it's apparently unsafe, but our Kashmiri friends assured us it isn't. And even though the soldiers are ever present with their enormous semi automatics slung casually over their shoulders and the razor wire is more prevalent than bricks, we never felt unsafe. So I say to those thinking about travelling there, just go! Maybe check the travel safety websites first, as we later found out you're supposed to do, to make sure your insurance covers you, but definitely go, as Kashmir is absolutely breathtaking. From the flight across the Himalayas to feeling like an Arabian princess in a Shikara on Dal Lake, to warming your hands on a kangri, it's a step back in time to a simpler and truly stunning way of life.
As we crossed the lake for the last time, through the misty waters from the boathouse to the shore, gazing out at the small wooden boats emerging from the foggy haze, I felt a huge sense of gratitude that I was able to experience this magical place with all its charm and beauty and then I felt, along with my frozen toes and hands, a huge sense of relief that we were finally leaving as well! As with most things when travelling there's always a few buts or 'if onlys' involved. Like the cold and Dan's food poisoning and like the pushy boathouse owners, when after a much heated discussion, involving lots of rolled eyes and big sighs, about our refusal to go on the overpriced 4 day trek and being made to feel like we were missing out on the trip of a lifetime, cornered us into settling for some overpriced day trips instead. We really do need to grow some balls.
Despite the negatives, we still left feeling like we had experienced something amazing and both agreed we would definitely return one day, in the summer!
