Rest in Peace Ricardo
This morning Ricardo, 97 year old frail man I described earlier, died in his bed at Mother Teresa´s. It has been a tough day thinking about him and my short time working with him. Alas, he is in a better place I am sure.
I knew the day was going to be challenging because my coffee was cold this morning (trying to bring humor to a sad situation). At work I was on my way to visit Ricardo but when I walked into his room, they were cleaning his body with the casket next to his bed. Obviously, this was quite a shock walking into his room and into work. Tears automatically fell and flashbacks of yesterday came to my mind. I also know that I never want to experience seeing a body being cleaned again, no matter my relationship with them. It is just too much to handle.
Two days ago Ricardo smiled and remembered me while I massaged his lower back and knee. However, yesterday when I came by he took the heating pad but didnt want to get massaged. He also slept more than usual and did speak to me briefly although I dont know what he said.
As Ive mentioned before, my first time seeing Ricardo was a difficult one because he was so frail and weak. Ive never seen anyone so thin and weak in my life. I guess yóu´re still never ready for someone to die although you know it is coming soon.
The funeral took place in the chapel inside Mother Teresa´s and my dear Tito sat with me, hand in hand. Tito makes me smile no matter what and it was so soothing to have him there at the service with me. I felt it only appropriate to share a picture of the two of us in this blog.
Im thankful I had the opportunity to meet Ricardo, hopefully make him a little more comfortable before he left us, and will always remember him.
