Day 4
Hello all. Another great day and the sun actually came out which gave that little extra burst of energy. I also saw the ocean for the first time while here last night and today which is always such a delight.
Last night I went out with my roomates to Barraco, 2 miles away from the house. It is right on the water and because there are large hills, it is layered with restaurants and pubs. I had my first Pisco Sour which they are famous for. Not a big fan of whiskey but somehow drank a couple, ha. Food here has been surprisingly great. Peru has hundreds of different types of potatoes! Guess I wont be losing any weight while here, oh well. when in peru...!
Mother Teresa´s was wonderful today. Some of the men remembered my name which obviously felt great. i did get hit in the head by a man, god bless, which gave me a little headache but it´s all good. Lots of massaging and i had requests from some men for me take care of them. little incident of someone pulling down their pants, but i know that my father is reading this. enough said.
I did find out how to distinquish whether a person is malnourished or not today. if they have white spots on their face or reddish highlights, they probably are. I also realized that while some people just keep talking to me and telling me stories i actually don´t know if they are speaking spanish or quechwan (spelling probably wrong) which is a native tongue of this part of peru. anyway, a man starting telling me how he lost his eye and his lack of use of his arm (guessed this by how he kept pointing etc) and i wished desperately that i could understand him and be able to somehow respond. all i could do with the language barrier was smile, nod, and hold his hand while he continued talking. he keeps smiling everyday.
After lunch I went to an Inca ruin about 20 minutes from home which was pretty amazing. climbing to the top I realized the Inca´s definitely had the best view in the city. Both sunrises and sunsets can be seen from the top, looking down at the Pacific and desert. Lots of history there that I wouldnt even know where to begin to share with you all.
That´s all for now. It´s been a long day and I´m looking forward to getting into my cold and damp room to do a bit of reading before passing out.
