Day 6
The sun is out today although it is very hazy. Work went well today. Instead of massaging, myself and other volunteers from the town and 3 from my organization, wheeled about 10 men through the dirty crowded streets of La Victoria. I thought we were going to watch a soccer game but that was not the case. Instead, we looked like a parade of wheelchairs dodging cars and people to a small park. They bought some soda and cookies and we all helped feed them. I'm sure it was quite a treat for them to get out and get some "fresh" air. My favorite little man Robert, go figure, is my little helper and although he is probably over 80 years old he helps to push around wheelchairs and feed people. He is so damn cute I call him my little grandfather.
I did visit my dying friend as promised. I think he remembered me but that might be wishful thinking. I kept him company for a short time after lunch and held his hand.
I seem to always bump into the same man in the hallway after lunch that at the same exact time and place he is trying to take off his sweatshirt. So today i helped him knowing where and what he would be doing. I'm feeling very comfortable at Mother Teresa's and the two men I work with in the rehab room, although they have little English, are so happy and energetic it makes time fly.
Last night I ended up going to Miraflores again and went to listen to some jazz with my two roommates. It wasn't too bad but weird to hear jazz in spanish. Pisco Sours are officially my new drink here and the tarter the better. I don't know what is going on for the weekend, apparently the glaciers are closed bc its winter here. We'll see....
Happy Memorial Day to you all. XO
