Our first day in Singapore was amazing! We started the day by taking a walk to the mall nearby to grab a coffee and Andrew wanted some new Jandals. It's definitely very warm weather that we weren't overly prepared for! We had a wander around the interesting wee shops in the area before heading back to the apartment to meet Vanessa.
It was then time to head into the centre of the city by bus which only cost us $1.50 each Singapore dollars. Super cheap to get around here! It was a nice bus ride into the city looking at all the interesting buildings and amazingly green landscape. Once we got into the city, we walked to the building that Dave works in and met him in the foyer. It was fascinating seeing all the people from his building flood out heading off to grab some lunch. So many people!
We then walked to a famous food market called 'La Pau Sat' where the selection of food was incredible! Dave and Vanessa had been there quite alot and knew what was good so we left the ordering up to them. We had yummy dumplings and a vegetarian filled pancake type thing. It was very hard to find a table so that was a good sign that the food was popular and it definitely was a delicious lunch. Singapore has fantastic food!
Dave then had to head back to work but Vanessa took us to all sorts of interesting places around the city. It's quite incredible that most of the shops and malls in the centre of the city are underground. 'The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands' were out of this world. All the top labels and high fashion are located in this mall and it is huge. There is even a stream of water running through the mall and people can hop on little boats and travel through the centre of the mall. Very cool!
We then went up to the top of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel' and had a drink at the top in a bar that's open to the public called 'Skybar'. This is an incredible building that has three towers with a boat like structure across the top. The bar is right at the front of 'the bow of the ship' so you feel like you are perched on a platform 57 stories high. It was a tad scary but WOW what an amazing view of the city!
Later this evening we met Dave at a bar called 'Overeasy' on the other side of the bay that looked towards 'Marina Bay Sands Hotel'. We settled in a couch that had an amazing view of the bay and a couple of Dave and Vanessa's friends met us there for a drink (Ginny and Cam) who are from New Zealand as well. It was really neat to meet them and am sure we will catch up with them again. We had some nibbles here then headed to a lovely Mexican Restaurant (Piedra Negra) in the Arab Quarter. The Arab Quarter was fascinating with a real nightlife scene that was a definite must visit! We had a really fun night and we ended up getting home about 2am in the morning!
So all in all we had an absolutely fabulous first day in Singapore and it feels as though we have been here way longer than a day. We have already packed in so much into the day and enjoyed every minute of it. Looking forward to doing and seeing many more exciting things!
