Denton is a two university city. North Texas University, founded in 1890 and Texas Woman's University, founded in 1901. the historic area consists of magnificent houses that were owned by the lecturers who could walk a short distance to the uni's. They had servants from the African/ American community that would have to walk a long distance to these big houses, do their work and walk home at night. But wow! the houses are gorgeous, I want several, but with servants because the upkeep, housework and maintenance would be enormous. One home, the James Newton and Eva Tabor-Rayzor house was completed in 1909 and is a "Prairie Style" house. Their descendants lived in it until 1978. It has a state of Texas historic plate on it.
The street is lined with Post Oaks, which are endemic to this area, they really set a serene, stately scene as you walk along.
Being proud Texans they use the red, white and blue along with the lone star on everything, even the wind chimes outside a home! Y'all have a great day is a common salutation, and as much as they like to listen to my 'cute little accent' I love hearing this salutation (that is apparently used throughout the southern states) because it reminds me of 'The Beverly Hill Billy's'! My cultural upbringing shines through all the time.
People individualise their houses here, which certainly adds to the charm of this city, not like Fisco up the road which is growing exponentially and the public buildings, houses and shopping centres are sterile, empty of soul boxes. I was glad to be out of there. I must concede that there is a small older part of Frisco that has charm.
After my stroll trough history I meet up with Jean and Arezou at 'Jupiter House' where they were studying with coffee! I made myself comfortable and finished my book 'The Wailing Wind', a damn good read.
I finally got to yoga today, what a treat. When the lady -Jenny-who took the class heard I was going to Guatemala wanted to phone her friend there and then because she owns a lovely place to stay on Lake Titlan, but I assured her that the accommodation there would be part of our tour she refrained. She had been to Australia and has dived on the Yongala wreck and visited Cairns.
I ended up having a very individual, personalised lesson because I was the only one there! She ended it with a 15 minute meditation which concluded a great session wonderfully.
This afternoon Jean and I had tea at Amitea, a high tea experience to be sure. I have discovered that American 'scones' are really our biscuits. The ones at Amitea were free and were Scottish Shortbread with Cranberries added, I had two.
Potted History Lesson. Texas was a province of Mexico until the 1830's and then was an independent Nation until it became part of the United States in 1845. It became the 28th State. The Lone Star symbol comes from when it was an independent country and it is still part of the State flag.
