The last 2 days have been more of the same routine. We have almost finished with all the block and mortaring. They say we will probably finish the house by Tuesday at this rate. I'm becoming more and more Thai- I have gotten really good and fast at balancing on the "squatter", I'm eating rice at every meal and I've learned about 10 good Thai phrases! The culture here is so different from America. 90% of the population ride mopeds without helmets, children and small babies are just held in their laps, kids are carrying backpacks and school projects on the back - it's crazy to watch. We have seen everything you can imagine in the road. My dog lover friends would flip out here because of all the stray dogs running around - on our morning walks we see hundreds of dogs everywhere! They are friendly and well fed for the most part but our have to be careful where you walk! Tonight we walked to the "walking street market" and saw every imaginable food and trinket you can imagine. It was like the the Fair and Canton mixed together, but really fun. We tried a few street foods and fruits. There are so many unique fruits and veggies here - we've tried the rose apple, star fruit, jack fruit, tamarind and a bunch more I can't remember the names. We have snacked on steamed pumpkin in the skin, roasted coconut wrapped in banana leaves, papaya, elephant chips, rice balls and many more I will try to remember later. The 2 homeowners who are preparing our food every day in their kitchen are really producing some amazing dishes - better than any restaurant yet.
Tomorrow we get on a bus at 6:00 am and drive 4 hours to northern Thailand for Chiang rai - it's supposed to be very beautiful and part of the "Golden Triangle" which includes Laos, Cambodia and Thailand. There is a point there where you can see all three countries. Then we will head back down to Chiangmai to spend the night (I'm glad we are getting out of this dumpy hotel for a night). Last night I got locked in the bathroom in my room & they couldn't get me out for 45 minutes because the door handle had broken inside. The front desk guy came up to help with an ax and a machete!! Haha -they finally got me out after a lot of banging and pounding. Everyone found it quite amusing.
