Today was the first official day of our Habitat build. We started at 6:30 am with a brisk walk to the local "wet" market which means all food not clothing, etc. It was amazing all the different fruits ,vegetables meats, different kinds of rice , coffee, teas, spices, bugs, etc! We bought some different types of rice rolled up in banana leaves and several different fruits to try. After walking back to hotel and eating breakfast we climbed into our "taxi" to go to work. It's a pickup truck that has 2 benches in back and is covered by a roof. It takes about 25 minutes to get to our building site. We start right in by literally moving mountains of dirt and rock to fill in the floor. It was hot, dusty work - you have shovelers and then you hand off buckets in a chain from person to person. It is back breaking but it goes quickly and we take a lot of breaks. The homeowners cook our meals and snacks and the food was quite delicious. More rice and stir fried vegetables & tofu. I just thought I was going to lose weight on this trip but I think the opposite is happening! All we do is eat! Tomorrow is concrete day and will supposedly be the hardest day of the week. Mark is already asleep at 8:30 (he did a lot of shoveling today) -tomorrow is his big birthday!
