so last last weekend, was the kings birthday. we got quickly dressed up in the full thai gear again and taken to the ceremony. the whole tessoban playing field was surrounded by a boarder of kind of stalls with food and drink. at the top was a giant picture of the king. you had to go up and give hime these ornaments. but had to bow and things, it was all very formal. so this is what we did. we walked behind the mayor and when we did our thing, the whole tessoban cheered for us. it was quite sweet really.
then once all this was finished, everybody lit a candle and sang a song, though couldnt tell you which one. the whole effect was really pretty as all the candles glowed in the dark and all for the king. they really love him, its cute.
also, last thursday there was a big english general knowledge quiz in the school. we were the quizmasters and even got little certificates at the end which is up on my bedroom wall now. even the primary school came. and i am happy to tell you all the loeng nokta won every section of it :) makes me proud as an english teacher.
What an awesome weekend. Another overnight 10 hour bus journey to Bangkok. When we arrived at 6 in the morning and nearly got run over by a dozen large buses no taxi knew what street we were going to. This should have been our first clue. When we finally found someone, he took us to the wrong place and spent almost 30 minutes finding the hotel. The hotel was in possibly one of the remotest places possible in china town. We quickly managed to find another place last minute. This place was great, very antique and a little like the garden of Eden. Then four of us went to meet Bill, a family friend who gave me my laptop. I have never been so happy J
We went to the amulet market after lunch. It was brilliant, lots and lots of pendants, and statues, an well, amulets. Afterwards, we thought the traffc was so bad that we got the boat bus back to the hotel. However, after missing our stop we ended up on the wrong side of the river and had to walk across a long bridge and a very long walk. However, with my wonderful direction and a little help from Lonely Planet, we found our back. A few drinks in the rooms and an early night so we would be awake and ready for Harry Potter the next day.
So the next day, got up earlyish and went to Grande Palace. One of the must see things in Bangkok, according our Lonely Planet. Once some people had borrowed more respectable clothes we were all ready to go in. it was quite remarkable. You can't actually go inside the palace but see all the wats and things around. Most importantly, The Temple of the Jade Buddha. It was awesome. It's just a little jade Buddha that sits on top of a mountain of gold things. Hard to describe, and no pictures allowed. But was really beautiful. The actual Buddha had a little top on because its the cold season. It has a different outfit for each season.
Anyway, once we were done we went home and got ready for the 5 o'clock showing of Harry Potter in IMAX!!. We went to the Paragon shopping centre. The whole place was awesome, a really posh, expensive shopping centre, the cinema was on the top floor. We got there and the whole place was massive. Just amazing!! Anyway, we got our tickets and went to 7/11 for snacks because the cinema food was so expensive and waited to go in.
Then we went in. Again, it was amazing. The biggest screen I have ever seen, and such good quality. It made the film so much better. Of course, it was a brilliant film already. But the bit with the snake, omg, almost jumped out my seat. What an amazing film. We are all definitely going back to the last ever harry potter film in july when it comes out. Just superb.
Then, we a had a night out. Obviously. Good night, but felt a bit sick, and one girl was sick, so we went home early. The next morning, didn't feel much better and lasted until we went to bus station to book tickets. I suddenly felt my mouth starting to water and went for the nearest bin and threw up. In MBK, we all had lunch at Pizza Company and I was hungry, so I ate. It cost 220 baht which is actually quite expensive. it was such a waste. I threw it all back up into the bowl I had just eaten from. I felt bad for the waitress. Anyway, after that I felt better, ish. And we got another 10 hour bus home to Loeng Nokta and had a very nice long sleep well into the afternoon.
It was definitely an awesome weekend and the Harry Potter was just fantastic.
