This journal entry (hopefully the first of many) is well overdue. It had always been my intent to begin writing before departing on our Australian 'adventure,' for want of a better word. Nonetheless, here we are, just over a week into our half year migration down under and we are loving it. As much as there is to be said about our exploits since arrival, I will do my best to sum it up as succinctly as I can. After leaving Heathrow at 10.30pm on Thursday 10th, even Virgin Atlantic were unable to prevent the torrid time we were due to endure. Perhaps that is a little harsh, in truth the first flight would have been reasonable if it were not for the tv entertainment breaking for 2 hours, the cabin crew saving the continental breakfast for themselves and the big woman parallel to me bashing me in the head every time she got up from her seat. And yes….. this did ensure that my sleep was severely damaged, not that I can catch 40 winks on planes anyway. The irony of the whole experience of travelling to our destination was that the second plane, service wise, was perfect, yet by then we really were out of it, not helped by, I may add by a toddler in front bouncing on its seat every 5 f***ing minutes, while its parents didn't have a care in the world……. I want to tell you a bit about stopping in Hong Kong airport….. but no I better speed up or I'll literally never stop writing (moaning) about flying half the side of the world. So we got to Sydney on the Saturday morning at 7am, waited around for our shuttle bus and found it to be driven by the most backward, blunt and scruffy looking Aussie you could possibly imagine. This feeling of slight insecurities about his driving ability and the safety of his vehicle was confirmed to me by Chloe commenting that she herself shared that view. Luckily we need not have worried, for at least we were the first off after about 20 minutes, behold the Wake Up hostel…. In all fairness we got what we paid for, a small room with a bed and for some reason a relatively new looking 32 inch plasma screen TV, not bad right? That would be good if Australian TV wasn't so s***. We spent the majority of the first few days sorting a few things out and fighting the jet lag, sometimes going to bed as early as 3/4pm, and waking up at 2/3am, not pleasant. Only now does it feel like we've actually been doing some touristy things, and finally we can fully enjoy ourselves. Yesterday we paid for a pass which allows us into a number of different attractions, seven days straight. Today we took the opportunity to go to Taronga Zoo and it did not disappoint one bit. By far the best zoo I've ever been too, with animals I can't imagine you'll ever seen at any zoo in England, infact I can now not even remember what they are called, well that seems pretty pointless now….. and I'm supposed to be educated? But yeah best of all was the sea lion show, that's one thing I will remember. This was not at all like any normal sea lion show you will ever go to. The star, 'Mitch' was trained to the point that the trainer could literally talk to him to say whether he wanted a smile, handshake, 'jump in' etc etc etc, you get the picture. But it's something that has to be seen. We also went to Watsons Bay, which was a beautiful but small beach area with some very nice houses practically connected to the sea. We have a variety of options for next week with 6 days left on the pass, plenty to see! Oh yeah I forgot to mention we've got a flat, bloody expensive for what it is but it's what we need. Chloe also got a job at Pandora after I convinced her to go in and tell them they needed her. As for me, well nothing yet but waiting to hear back next week, made a schoolboy error by putting the wrong mobile number down on my CV for the first set of applications, so we will see what happens next week with the real one!
