Hi Folks....well had an eventful day yesterday with wounds and amputees...the experience was surreal...Jane and I armed with gloves and equipment were left to our own devices...the sister asked me to give IM pethidine to a man who's legs I was just about to dress...dear god she gave me a needle the size of a pitchfork!!!! No time was given for the pethidine to kick in and legs were stripped and cleaned. The sister of the ward handed me a scalpel and told me to get to work debriding the skin...debriding was not the word she wanted me to remove chunks of skin!! The poor chap was biting his t-shirt and screaming out in pain..I felt physically sick!!! He was really grateful for all my help...poor jane was in a state of shock and what she was witnessing...not only of the gruesome site but of the poor gentlemans pain and suffering. I just tried to concentrate on what i was doing and jane had to leave. One all dead skin was removed I dressed his legs and spoke to him to tell him how brave he was. I think this is something i will never forget..im just amazed at how they put up with all the suffering in silence! The Ugandans are truely lovely people and we are both so overwhelmed by their trusting personalities and their kindness towards us. We have both felt it's been a very thought provoking time in our lives and feel thankful for the life we lead. TODAY has been amazing..we were heading for the medical ward this morning and we walked round the corner and a lady had just given birth outside on the pavement. To see it in all its glory was fantastic. All I can say folks is that this adventure has been an emotional rollercoster from start to finsh! We are very much looking forward to the weekend as we have a safari trip booked and are camping overnight to live with the animals!! Stay tuned folks!! xxxxx
