Hey! I finally made it. The last time I wrote I was in Texas. YEEEEHAW! All that stormy weather made for about a 6 hour layover because the runway was closed. FUN!
I figured all the waiting was over until I actually made it down to the immigration area in the Mexico City airport and waited almost 2 full hours in line. The sea of humanity waiting in line was depressing and if I hadn't been sitting all day up to that point I may have gotten grumpy. By the time I made it to customs it was 8:15PM (and I left Seattle at 6AM). Of course not thinking things could get much more mind numbing I didn't sweat passing customs. When they pulled me off to the side to inspect all my bags (and for those of you who didn't see, I packed a TON), I knew the fun had just begun! Yesssss! At least the gal who inspected my bags was cute.
By then, I figured there would be no chance of getting to Xalapa (it's at least 6 hours from Mexico City in decent traffic) and was trying to find a place to change my money and then rest my head. I rounded the corner and ran smack into a new bus terminal. Feeling like I had nothing to lose I asked what the chances were to get to Xalapa. She said there was a bus leaving in 20 minutes with only one other passenger. I told her I must be dreaming. After taking my money and assuring me I wasn't, I took off down the terminal, trying to find the bus before it left.
I arrived in Xalapa almost 6 hours later to the minute and Jorge got up to come get me. The whole family was up at 2:30 in the morning to say Hi. I had dinner (some EXTREMELY delicious tacos they had ordered in; some of my favorites), and we caught up. I think it was almost 5 before we hit the sack.
Today was great. I spent time getting my Spanish tongue back in shape, resting (I slept almost until noon) and trying to find some way to get my suit down here (I guess going to a summer wedding in anything less is somewhat embarassing). Thankfully my cell works great, and after a few well placed phone calls (thanks Mar and Sar), I won't be the only underdressed person at the wedding of the summer.
We went out after lunch to see the city. It has changed a TON. I felt so lost. It's amazing what changes year to year. A new tunnel, freeway, mall, restaurant, and movie theatre were on the list. Jorge and I spent some quality time catching up on how much trouble we can get into in two years and Gaby came to get us after she got off work. We came home and watched goofy clips on You Tube (mindless entertainment) and laughed ourselves silly.
It's nearly 2 AM and I really should think about getting on their sleep schedule. Don't forget to post some notes on the message board, it's really fun to get a note when you log in! You keep posting, I'll keep writing...
More later!
