Singapore Polytechnic organised a party for us, where several students from the course we were joining, provided entertainment and introduced SP to us. It was quite overwhelming the amount of effort that they had put in. After the welcome, a buffet was laid out, consisting of various Chinese dishes. It gave us chance to mingle and find out about life in Singapore and to tell the students about England. Conversations varied from favourite music, hobbies and aspirations. When I asked students what they hoped to do, their was little hope in their responses, that they could do what they wanted to do, mainly because Singapore is so small and it's so expensive to live here. They thought Singapore was boring because once you've done everything, it becomes part of the norm- it get's tedious and repetitive. As the party began to disintergrate, all 6 from Keele arranged to meet Raina, Winston and Jamie later that night.
Raina has a very individual style, she enjoys Cosplay and is upfront (which is cool). She's a member of Sonic Escapade (electro-audio improvisation group) and plays the piano and the zheng (plucked string instrument) amazingly well. Jamie and Winston have gained Keele scholarships, so Jamie will be joining Keele in September (as a 2nd year music and music tech student). Winston will be coming to Keele in two years time, once he's done his compulsory national service. Both Jamie and Winston are members of Sonic Escapade. They suggest we should go to Zouk (a club over the River), but in the end, we buy alcohol and drink them on the roof terrace of the Esplanade.
The Esplanade is a rather spiky looking building, located along the River at Marina and is Singapore's Premier performing arts centre. As you walk through the theatre, you walk through an art gallery with insulations and drawings, then on another level you'll bet b.boys practicing break-dancing moves or people sleeping there. From the roof, you get an amazing view of the city at night and the docks. This juvenile behaviour made me feel like one of the chavs in England. There were couples having a "romantic moment".
