The setting for the 2nd years assessed performance is situated in the cafe of the Esplanade adjoining the library. As I chose the performance module, I've also had the opportunity to perform with the lecturer, Michael Spicer. The performance groups follow the same idea as those of at Keele, where students create their own groups and prepare for a performance. The performance showcased a wide variety of instruments from the common to the Oriental. This was the largest crowd I've ever played to- over 60 people squeezed into the little art cafe and I was nervous, I'd only had the piece for a week and squeezed in 12 hours of practice in total. The piece was Sicilliene by Faure with flute. The performance was also been recorded via 2 cameras. The performance went well with no major gliches, perhaps, it could've been louder, but I'm not use to playing an electric piano.
The cafe hosts regular music nights- open mic and intimate performances from session musicians. Prices are a little expensive, $5 for a pot of tea and selsl cakes and sandwiches. It reminds me of Reubens in Newcastle.
