It was my first flight anywhere and it wasn't too bad. Arriving at 8am, I met Nikki, Mike, Allan, Dean and Jake at Manchester Airport. The flight was due to leave at 10.50, I admit I was a liitle nervous. Once on board and after take-off, I was fine. Occasionally the turbulence bugged me, it was particularly bad over Germany, but the food was good, the leg room- more than adequate and the in-flight entertainment was amazing. I watched so many films and tv episodes, and played for hours sometimes on the choices of games available. Films: -Chicago -Juno -Enchanted -Step Up 2 -I Am Legend TV episodes: -Top Gear -Sex and the City (the one where the Manolos' get nicked and Carrie marries herself) -The Simpsons (Bart gives away Santa's Little Helper). The food was reallly nice and we were offered snacks and water all the time. Having travelled 10,850kms in 13 hours, we arrived in Changi Airport, Terminal 2 at 5am, the temperature outside was already 28C, but I remained blissfully unaware due to the air conditioning. We met with 2 lecturers and tried a local breakfast favourite- Kaya toast and sweet tea (it was incredibly sweet, about 5 sugars too many sweet!!!) This breakfast consisted of 2 soft boiled eggs with soy sauce and toast dipped in egg and sugar, with a coconut and sugar filling. It wasn't too bad! We waited around a bit for Will from the Heathrow flight, and then it was off to the apartment. Having flown in trousers, hoodie and t-shirts, I stepped outside, it was so hot and humid, and lugging suitcases didn't help either. First impressions of the apartments were dingy and musty, but they had a bed and air-conditioned, so couldn't really complain. There's loads of ants, which get into all our food and we also have a Gekko (small lizard) living with us. Walking towards from the uni there's also a sign that says "BEWARE OF THE SNAKES" eeek!
After a couple hours of sleep, we were out and about. I acquired my ez-link card for $15, this allows for easy payment on buses and trains and my first proper acquaintance with the MRT (like the London underground). We took a trip to Raffles Place and Clarke Quay. Had a walk around the waters edge, saw the Merlion and the Esplanade theatre, took loads of photos, and found a row of hawker stands on the street (food stalls, basically). The food is incredibly cheap here, you can get a main dish for about $3, it's so cheap!!!!! After much excitement for one day, it was off to bed.
