Captain Tom's Voyage of Discovery
Howdy again!
Well the last two days have been jolly good. I have headed out of the city centre taking in the sights of the surrounding areas.
Geylang, is the suburb in which the 'Metro Y Youth Lodge' is based - my hostel in Singapore. Some of you will be keen to know that it is fact one of the 'red light' areas of Singapore, frequently visited by the Malay community who make up the majority in Geylang. In true Singapore style, the scantily clad ladies, are only permitted to operate on 'Lor' (roads) which are of an even number. As my hostel is on Lor 23, none of you have anything to worry about. However, a few do stray from their designated area and I my walk from the Hostel to the local MRT station is usually accompanied by a few ladies asking me if I want a 'massageeee'. In true British style, I simply reply with, 'no thank you.'
After having the 3 bed dorm all to my self on night one, I am know sharing with an Oz (whose name has just escaped me) guy who is about to go and work in a pub in London for 5 months. He was not impressed when I told him that summer in the UK has absolutely no resemblance to summer in Australia (they get sun, we don't.) After paying $15 for a pint of Heineken (about 5 quid!!!) I had decided to put drinking of until I arrived in Alice. My room mate thankfully acted as my savior on this one: On my return to the hostel one night, no sooner had I thrown my bag onto my bed, a cool can of Tiger Beer had been passed in my direction. Judging by the size of the beer can tower next to his bed, I guess he had been drinking for a while.
On Friday, I decided to visit the Chinese Garden. This involved lots of gentle strolling, taking pictures of the various buildings, Pagodas and small gardens. The garden also hosts the world's largest collection of turtles - they have a certificate from Guinness World Records! Did manage to catch two turtles 'at it' heheheh.
After the Garden, I went back to Little India.....and yes.....I had a curry......again. This time I decided to skip with the ordered nature of a proper curry house and go to the legendary Tekka Hawker Centre. A hawker centre is basically a huge collection of small food stalls of every variety of food from the different cultural groups of Singapore. You pick your stall, order (I went for a $2.50 chicken curry), sit any where you like and in a minute they hunt you down and give you your curry. Now eating utensils are not provided so I decided to eat it entirely with my right hand. Cue 'look at me, I am a tourist moment number one': After getting pretty messy, I pull out my nice travel pack of Kleenex and make myself a nice napkin.
After cleaning myself up, I headed off to the famous Night Safari!!! This was basically an uber cool Zoo.....at night! I took a tram ride and caught site of all the little (and big) critters on show. Unfortunately, I couldn't take any pictures as flash photography 'really pisses them off'.
Ok - this is becoming another large update, so I will post what I did today (Saturday) on a different post.
