Captain Tom's Voyage of Discovery
Howdy.
Well I started to write this update at Singapore's Changi Airport but then realized I hadn't posted my postcards and my departure time was creeping up on me. My last night in Singapore was pretty good but not too eventful. After arriving back at the hostel, I once again postponed my trip to Raffle's, as I simply couldn't be bothered going back in to the city center again. After my room mate and I exchanged our stories for the day (he had been to the cinema...again) we toasted to our last night in Singapore (he was off to Thailand) with a vegemite sandwich! After I mentioned that I was quite partial to a marmite and cheese sandwich, a debate about which 'mite' was the superior product followed. Hehehe.
The trip to the local MRT station the next morning was infinitely faster than when I arrived - 45 minutes walking around Singapore with an 18kg backpack in 30-degree heat was not fun! Managed to dump my bags at the airport and as my flight wasn't until the evening, I had time to check out a few more sights. Not too far from the airport was the memorial to Changi Prison. Changi prison was used as a POW camp for all the allied troops that the Japanese captured in Malayan are conflicts. Bit of a shame, as the original chapel built by POWs had been destroyed but still good as I got my dose of history!
After getting back into the center of the City and Little India, I went to perhaps the BEST shopping center ever: The Mustafa Center. This place had EVERYTHING and everything was at the low prices you expect in the rest of South East Asia. Walls full of I pods, digital cameras, washing machines, England footy shirts, CDs, DVDs, food etc. It was probably good that I was running low on Singapore $ as I could have easily spent a fortune there. Whilst walking back to the MRT station, I had a random guy, complete with backpack, asking me if I spoke English. After establishing that I could in fact speak English, the guy introduced himself as (a very lost) Paul from Doncaster. How could I refuse to help a fellow lost traveler in Singapore? Out came the 'lonely planet' and after a chat about Singapore, gap years, mid life crisis + footy I managed to point him in the direction of a hostel. Well at least I hope I did...
After my good deed for the day, I finally got to Raffle's Hotel! Woohoo! The first thing I noticed when I walked in to the bar was that the floor was covered in peanut shells! After pulling up a stool at the bar, I finally got my Singapore Sling. It was pretty nice - much better than the earlier version on which I based my 'cough medicine' statement. Managed to get talking to another man from Oz and got some good tips (and a pint of Tiger!) on what to do. Then it was back to the Airport and off to Australia...
