Sunday 30th September
We flew into Kota Kinabalou and our hotel was only 5 minutes from the airport when I booked it I knew we was not near the city centre but the hotel details included a free shuttle bus to the city and there was also a beach within 5 min walking distance.
Immediately when we booked in we didn't like it, the place was grubby and the room was tired and dated. The pillow cases were grey they were that old. We made a quick coffee freshened up and went down to reception to book the shuttle bus into the city only to be told no bus was running on a Sunday. So we booked a taxi and this cost us 25myr £5. We wasn't sure where to go so had a quick look map and decided on centre point which looked like 2 big shopping malls and a food court. When we pulled up it was very much a local shopping mall and because it was a Sunday was extremely busy with families and wasn't really what we was looking for so we got into a taxi and went into, the city centre. We also had to check out some hotels as we didn't want to stay at the Casurina another night. This proved more difficult than we thought. There was plenty of hotels about but they were all full. We had just left the city of Kuching which was quite and Lee met someone the night we left who had just come from Kota Kinabalu and they said how quite it was. So after trudging around in the heat for about 2 hours we decided to get something to eat and opted for a meal in the Jesselton Hotel where we had just been looking for a room. I enjoyed a smoked salmon Pasta meal washed down with a lovely cold glass of Sauvignon Blanc whilst Lee had spaghetti bolognaise washed down with a strawberry milkshake. We then got a taxi back to the hotel and went straight on the Internet and booked the Sabah Oriental hotel for the next day.
Didn't have a particularly good night sleep. Went for breakfast which was just basic. We then decided to walk to the beach. We we was so disappointed in the beach it really was not what we expected considering we was in Borneo but we just put it down to being in a bad spot and was sure there was better beaches in better towns. So we retuned to the hotel, packed, checked out and made out way to Sabah Oriental.
