We left Ao Nammo today and looking forward to the next step of our travels. Our flight to Kuala Lumper was a relief instead of a long journey by bus, but we had to endure the long taxi ride into the city which took us 2 hours. The hotel was in a great location and as we pulled into the hotel we could see the Petronas Towers lit up from a distance. We checked in and I had booked us an Executive Room as the rate didn't seem to expensive for a city hotel and was hoping we had a view of the towers. Four years ago we visited KL and had a fantastic view from our room of the towers. Unfortunately when we was shown to our room although it was on the 8th floor we didn't have the view we hoped for. You looked down from our room and you could see the pool which really did not seem very exciting but as it worked out we didn't have time to use it. We wasn't too pleased with the room but decided to give it a go until the next morning. Our porter who brought our bags up was a really friendly helpful chap who wanted to give us lots of advice of where to go and how to get there and he showed us on the map. We decided to freshen up and use the tube station instead of sitting again for ages in a taxi. We was confident of this after using the MRT in Hong Kong and it really was very simple. We headed for Central Market and Chinatown.
We decided to come KL for the shopping as we had some Birthdays to buy for and knew this would be the best place to shop. So after 3 hours of hard bartering and shopping we decided to stop for a drink and something to eat. We was enjoying a beer and Lee said he felt something across his feet, a young couple were also looking down by his feet and on the floor then something ran past really quick, we then realised it was a big rat, and Lee shuddered thinking that was crawling around his leg. Now a few years back we would have left, but you kind of accept things like that now so we stayed, enjoyed our nice cold Tiger beer and tucked into chicken and rice whilst people watching. The time went so quick and before we knew it the stalls were packing up and it was nearly 11pm. Panic we was supposed to be buying for daughter Sam's birthday so we could package it up and send it off next day by mail, too late so we headed back to the hotel absolutely exhausted.
Saturday 8th September:-
We really didn't sleep very well and Lee said he spent the night itching and had to put a towel on the bed so we decided to ask to change rooms and maybe get a better view as well. We had breakfast which was ok and asked to change rooms, nothing was available until later so we decided to go off for the day and see about changing rooms later. Our first task was to find a post office see what services they had to offer so we could send off some presents. Fortunately there was a PO about a 5 min walk from the hotel. They only had small boxes and we wasn't sure if what we bought was going to fit, the PO closed at 5.30so we thought we go and do some more shopping and return later. We went back to China town and it was exhausting doing the whole bartering and shopping thing again so we decided to go back to the hotel and rest. When we got back we changed rooms which wasn't much different to what we already had it was just on a higher floor. We had a rest and decided to get to the post office before it closed only I got the times wrong it shut at 5 and 5.30 so the only option was to rush to PO before we left on Monday which we really didn't want to do.
We freshened and decided to have dinner and look around the shops in Bukit Bintang. We used the MRT which was so simply and cheap and arrived in the busy area of Bukit, as it was a Saturday night there was lots of groups of young people and the placed seemed lively with a good atmosphere. There was lots of people selling watches on the pavement and I said to Lee watch out to see if they are selling any Phillep Pataek watches, he didn't have a clue what they were and no I couldn't see any either!! Not to worry I'm happy with my Fossil watch! There was about 3 huge shopping centres all in one area. We had a wander around and spotted a TGI Fridays. Just before when we was on the MRT I said to
Lee that I really fancied Southern fried chicken so was pleased when Lee agreed that we could eat in there. We had a lovely meal and I enjoyed a couple of glasses wine whilst Lee opted for the Sprite with free refills! Shame they didn't do the same for the wine. The evening went so quick again and before we realised it was 10.30 so not sure what time the tubes stopped running we decided to head back. Another exhausting day.
Sunday 9th September:-
We slept much better but woke up exhausted and knew we still had lots to do in KL one of them was to visit some
friends Emily and Cody who were dog sitting for their friends but we realised they were staying just a bit too far from where we was so we had to let them know that we wouldn't be able to see them during our time in KL. We wanted to go back and see the Petronas Tower as we saw them before and were excited that we had the opportunity to go visit them again particularly as there was a big shopping in one of the towers. We had a wonder around took lots of photos but was hounded by a guy who wanted to sell us a brand new IPhone, it looked really impressive and we couldn't work out how you could manage to copy an IPhone and thought perhaps it was stolen. We haggled him down to what we wanted to pay that was £40 but he wanted us to pay more, we said no that was final offer but he still seemed to follow us around, I thought he would give when he saw us leaving but he didn't, it would have been good to get an IPhone for £40.
We left the towers and headed back to Central market, whilst I was buying from a stall Lee disappeared and returned all excited that he had seen something. He took me over a DHL stall where he was arranging with the lady for us to send some gifts home later that day and the good news it would only take 3-4 days so Sam would get her birthday present in time, but the bad news was up to 10kg would cost £100. Anyway we decided to head back to the hotel wrap up what we had and return later, only on the way we decided to nip into Chinatown and buy more bits to send home.
Exhausted again we got back to the hotel sorted out what we bought, wrapped up the presents, freshened up and trudged back onto the MRT laden down with bags and headed for the DHL stand. All excited that we could send stuff home and it would arrive in 3-4 days we got everything weighed and in came in just under 10kg, great we thought, then the woman gave us the box that we was to send it in, well I nearly cried it was a piddly little box and no way was all the stuff we brought going to fit. No matter how much I tried it just wasn't going to fit in this box so we had a pack it all back up and head back again. By this time I was losing the will to live and I remembered seeing a bar up one of the streets near the market called the Reggae bar, so we headed there, had two lovely cold Carlsberg lagers, then laden with bags of we went again. So the next morning we would have to be up early to get to the PO to send these bits off.
Monday 10th September:-
Set our alarm for 6.30 wanted to wake up nice and early to get packed then sort out sending home these gifts. We had breakfast and off we went to the PO for when it opened at 8.30. When we arrived we asked the staff if they had any bigger boxes and all they had was on on the shelves they weren't big so we just had to make do, pack as much as we could into each one and send them off. We filled three and asked for 2 more, a young chap then returned with about 4 bits of cardboard which he had to make the boxes up, as we was on a tight schedule Lee was getting irritated at watching this guy trying to put together these boxes, it was quite funny to watch as he put up when side of the box then other side would fall down and this seemed to go on for ages, then Lee noticed the guy had 6 fingers on one hand. Well instead of discreetly saying to me what he noticed he shouted out "the guys got six fingers" the poor guy looked up at Lee, by this time he had put the box together and as we walked away I did mention to Lee how loud he spoke and the fact that most Malaysians can speak English so he felt a bit bad about what he just said. So with all the presents packed up we took them to the desk to get weight and it all came to £100, the same as DHL the only problem it was going to take 2 weeks. We left the PO in plenty time and went back to our hotel and finish packing and check out. We was going to use the MRT for our transport to the airport but changed our minds at the last minute and decided to get a taxi, fortunately as we coming out of the city it didn't take us as long to get to the airport. So all went well and we for our flight to ...... Then onward to the Perhentian islands.
