We flew from KL into Kota Bharu from there it was a 1 hour taxi drive to the jetty where we got a speed boat to Perhentian Besar. We had a few drop offs on the Islands and they all looked lovely. When we for to our drop our Resort stood on its own beach and it was just beautiful, it reminded us very much of Koh Phangan. We got off the jetty and carried our cases along to reception. We had a nice cold welcome drink, just orange juice, no alcohol allowed on this resort. We was given our key and a map of where our room was, our room was ok basic but big and clean, no bugs. We got changed and headed for the beach it was absolutely beautiful and we couldn't wait until the next day to go snorkelling. We then walked across the bridge to another beach and had something to eat before retiring to bed looking forward to the next day.
Tuesday 11th September:-
We was woken about midnight with the slight rumblings of thunder then after about 10 to 15 mins the storm was above us and there was massive cracks of thunders and the room shook each time it thundered. This went on for about 30 minutes then the electricity went off so we was worried that the room was going to get hot as the air conditioning went off but it was fine and we managed to get back to sleep. Of course I automatically got up and put the kettle on, lee laughed and said what I was doing as he knew the electricity was still off, we looked outside and there were lights on over in the main building so we got dressed for breakfast.
Although this hotel was situated on the best beach in the Perhentian Islands it certainly wasn't the best hotel. I was going to write about all the bad things about it but it seemed little point other than to say that the pool was green and looked like it hadnt been cleaned in ages and the breakfast was not particularly tasty but hey we was in paradise why worry about it. It was a shame because it seemed that whoever was responsible for the management and maintenance of the hotel just didn't seem to care so that was how it was.
So we got ready and headed for the beach and everything horrid behind us that was part of the hotel was soon forgotten as we sat on the most beautiful beach we have seen so far, the view was breathtaking. We went and got some snorkels and I was so excited as the last time I tried snorkelling it was a bit of a flop so I was really looking forward to this. We got all geared up with our life jackets as well and off we went, we spent about 2 hours snorkelling and didn't really see anything apart from a few little tiddlers, but we enjoyed it all the same, it was great fun. We enjoyed the rest of the day in and out of the water. Had a tasty dinner at Watercolours resturant the other side of the beach and retired to bed. We met a lovely waitress there called Ayu who sang and chatted to all the customers.
Wednesday 12th September
We just had coffee and toast for breakfast then headed off to the beach and hired snorkels again. This morning was really exciting as when we was snorkelling we saw 2 large turtles under the water. As Lee went down to have a better look one swam up right by the side of him and popped his head up for air, Lee said it was one of the most exciting things to happen to him. We snorkled as much as we could there was plenty of coral reefs on the Island but sadly most of the coral has died, probably due to all the boats that come in with their fumes and the fact that it is overcome with tourists. We just spent another lovely day by the beach but late afternoon there was another storm so we was stuck in our room for a bit.
We decided that we wanted to stay longer on the Perhentian Islands so although we wasn't too keen on the hotel we loved its location. We enquired at the desk but it was overpriced compared to what we paid on line. So when we went out for dinner we enquired in the other hotels but they were full as it was coming up to a Malay holiday at the weekend. We had to walk past another resort called Coral View and the receptionist was so friendly as we enquired if there were any rooms available, immediately she offered discount and showed us 3 rooms available, we picked the middle priced room it was a bit of a luxury with a lovely big veranda and small sitting room. So the next day we would be checking out of Perhentian Resort and into Coral View.
Thursday 13th September
This morning we moved around to the other side of the beach to Coral View, it was so much nicer here the staff were friendly and seemed so happier, you never saw anybody smile in PR. We walked down to Watercolours resort had lunch and chatted to the lovely Ayu. Whilst we was having lunch a young tanned guy came up and spoke to us, apparatnely he recognised us from Vang Vieng and said how nice it was to see us still travelling and enjoying life, he said we looked really happy! We didn't get a chance to speak to him much more as someone was eating for him. We was also paid another compliment by Ayu who said Lee was sparkly. We loved it here so again we checked in for another 2 days so stayed on Perhentian islands for 7 days when we thought we would only be there for 3.
Monday 17th September:-
Theres not much more to say about the Perhentian Islands as all we did was snorkel, sunbathe, read and just be totally relaxed, so we sadly had to check out and also say goodbye to Ayu who has become good friend. - next stop Redang island.
