Monday 1st October
The taxi dropped us of at this wonderful big hotel and our luggage was taken into the hotel by a very helpful Concierge by the name of Rosileh. Our booking from booking.com hadnt come through so we couldn't check in yet so sat in the lounge and enjoyed a complimentary cup of coffee. They had a cake stand with a wonderful of array of cheesecakes and we knew that we would try one out before we left. Within about half an hour our room was ready and Rosileh brought us up to our room on the 11th floor. The room was big with a big window where you could see Mount Kinabalou. Rosileh was very chatty and spoke really good English he asked what our plans were and gave us lots of advice with regards to tours so we said we would catch up with him later and book some tours.
We found out that morning that it just so happens the few days that we we will be staying in Kota Kinablou also coincides with a Chinese National Holiday and USS John C. Stennis, a famous United States Navy aircraft carrier with a 5,500-member crew, The 97,000-ton and 1,092-foot ship, which is part of the John C. Stennis Strike Group (JCSSG) and one of the 10 Nimitz-class aircraft carriers in the US Navy, had just arrived here yesterday for a four-day visit after four weeks at sea having left the US on 27th August.
We booked some tours with Rosileh then decided to go into the City. We had a wonder round and found first floor where we sat and had a few beers and people watch. This was fascinating as we watched in crowds these big US Navy crew men come in and out of the bars, you sure wouldn't mess with them they were huge. You could spot them a mile off with there distinctive 3/4 length shorts, tattoos and just by how big they were.
We got a taxi back to the hotel and looked forward to the next days trip to Mount Kinabalou and the Rain Forest.
