When Erica relieved me at 2145, the wind was non-existent and we were floating around like a giant bobber out on the ocean.
But sometime during her watch, the wind came up nicely. Trouble was it was from the wrong direction. So Peter and Erica tacked the boat to the port tack for the first time since leaving the Chesapeake. Later Peter told me that he was just getting too close to Bermuda and thought if we found out how close we were than we would all mutiny and head into St. George's.
I fixed breakfast which consisted of a pound of bacon, hash browns with onion and Garlic and 8 scrambled eggs. It wasn't my best work but everyone seemed to like it.
We are currently close hauled on a course of about 160 degrees magnetic. The best we can do at the moment.
The afternoon was spent, as usual, laying about on deck and enjoying the sun and sea. Marty tried to manufacture a tasty looking lure with some tin foil enhancement. No joy there. There is too much Sargasso seaweed in the water and it keeps fouling the hook.
Erica was really into a book called Margaret Atwood by Alias Grace. And Dale was either in his rack or at the helm. I did a little cleaning of the bright work. I must say that, unlike my last skipper, Peter is very appreciative of anything and everything we do to keep the boat sailing smooth and looking neat.
Happy hour commenced about 1500 and Erica chose the music. We all sat up on deck eating crackers and cheese, sipping our toddies and chatting as the sun slowly sets in the West. What a life!
Peter cooked a pork roast with carrots tonight. A little dry but the red wine made up for it. Erica volunteered to clean up.
The movie for tonight was Lawrence of Arabia with Peter O'toole, and Omar Sharif. Unfortunately, the movie got interrupted by a shift in the wind. We had to go topside and bring in the jib and turn the engine on because the wind shifted to south and either tack would have taken us off course 45 degrees.
I had the 2200 to 0100 watch and the wind was a steady 15 knots driving us along at a nice 6 1/2 knot clip. Just as I was finishing my watch, the gimbal on the stove broke and the stove crashed to the bulk head. I fetched a pair of pliers, vice grips and right angle screwdriver from the tool locker and Peter and I managed to fix it, at least temporarily.
