We drove out of Karijini through the Munjina gorge and headed north hoping to leave the rain behind us.
Roughly four hours later arrived at Port Hedland in cyclonic conditions. Paid $80 for a powered tent site believing we would be spending the night sleeping in the car.
Found a friendly little cafe in the local shopping centre and spent the next couple of hours warm and dry eating burgers and hot chips.
Unfortunately, the weather hadn't improved when we ventured back out and we needed to set up camp before it got dark. I now know what Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz felt like before she was sucked up by the tornado. Unfolding a camper trailer in excessive wind is not a habit I want to get used to.
While we battled the flapping canvas and banging poles, a lovely couple next to us fed the kids ice-cream.
The glimpse of the sunset while we struggled the elements was quite spectacular above the twinkly lights of Port Hedland but tomorrow come rain, hail or shine we are heading north.
