Left our commodore and camper trailer at the Broome Army Base and headed north in our trusty 'Thrifty' 4WD.
Refueled at Derby before turning onto the Gibb River road around lunch time. For the next 4 hours we bounced our way along the 189km to Mt Hart.
Grassy little campsite next to a river with resident freshwater crocs, not that we caught a glimpse of any. Our first attempt at putting up the tent was a bit dodgy but we entertained the other couple of campers. Shared the fire with a lovely couple, Greg and Lucy from Albany and melted marshmallows for my birthday.
Explored Annie's Pool where we collected fresh drinking water and Matthew's Gorge. Not a gorge as such but a collection of pools great for swimming. Best thing, not a sole in sight except for two rock wallabies we spotted on the way out.
On our last night walked up to the quaint old Homestead and treated ourselves to pre-dinner drinks. The barman was from the north of Italy and was working his way around Oz. I think Izzy was a little smitten kept asking lots of questions. Returned back to camp equipped with head torches in case any slithering reptiles spotted ....... all clear.
Our first pack up was better than our set up, so hopefully we will keep improving. Alan and Wendy, the camp rangers originally from Logan in Brisbane showed the kids a little microbat who had made his home in the toilet block. Just a speck of black but he very kindly opened his wing so everyone got to see him.
