We woke early to find most of the camp had already left! We assumed they were doing the day hikes through the mountains. I think we had parked in the middle of a bee highway as there were hundreds of bees everywhere!
We went to the park info centre where we decided to do a 2hr 6km walk to see a water fall. The weather was sunny and it was a lovely walk through plains, forests and then the waterfall which Garth went for a swim in! It was good to have some exercise and it was so easy compared to the inca trail!
We had lunch back at the info centre before starting a long, hot, sweaty and windy drive down to Tararua Forest Park. We stopped to buy ice and more fresh food to keep us going for the rest of the north island.
We stayed at a beautiful campsite by a river and forest where I made a fantastic bacon pasta and our neighbour was a super cute little girl who made me really miss Leo! There were sand fleas everywhere so our feet were bitten a lot! Garth slept a little better as we used one of the pillows for his hips.
We are realising we will need to plan our camp sites further ahead to make sure we can shower every few days!
Also, people chat to us and ask us where we have been, and we have no idea how to pronounce the Mauri names, so we can't answer them and it's quite embarrassing! I had no idea how crazy the place names were in NZ!!
