Hey everyone!
Sorry it has been forever since I have updated. I have been SUPER busy and tired. I Just got home from Barcelona, Spain so I have that to write about and then last weekend I visited many cities in Northern Spain with my parents to write about! So this is going to be a long one.
Last Saturday I flew into Bordaeux, France to meet my parents. It was my first time flying with RyanAir and it was a nightmare. I got there and they threw half my toiletries away, then made me pay 40 euros (about 50 dollars) to check my backpack at the gate because they said it was to big. 40 Euros to check my bag and my flight was only 25 euros! It was crazy! But then I finlly got to see my parents after a long wait and we jumped in the car and headed for Spain! We went to San Sabastian the fist day and had lunch, walked around a bit, saw a wedding going on at the Cathedral, and sat and people watched for a while. We then headed to Bilbao which was a pretty big city. We stayed in an interesting hotel and found some good places for dinner. We went to the Guggenheim museum, which we did not like. It was contemprary art which we did not have much appreciation for but it was cool to say we have been there. It rained one of the days that we were there but we had many things to do indoors that day so it was perfect. We walked around and explored a lot on our own there, did a little shopping and tried some Tinto de Verano (grandma you would love that). Tinto is a mix between red wine and a lemon/lime soda. It is very refreshing and a good drink to have in the afternoon! My parents have taken a strong liking to the Tapas (appetizer plates), I have not. After Bilbao we drove to Leon and stayed there one night. Our hotel was very cute and European. My dad ended up getting a flu type virus or ate something bad so he was not feeling good. My mom and I took that as an opportunity to shop! We also saw the cathedral and many great plazas. Tuesday we woke up early and drove to Santiago de Compostela. This was my favorite city of the trip. It is a city that is famous for its growing pilgrimage site, their cathedral. The pilgrimage goes from France to Santiago's cathedral where St. James is buried and they have a sculpture of him that you can hug for him to watch over you. The city itself was gorgeous. There were many cute restaurants there and my mom and I ate at a fantastic Crepe restaurant (my dad was still sick). We walked in a great park that had a city view that went on for miles. On Wednesday my parents dropped me off at the airport and I flew back to Sevilla at about 9PM. I had two midterms on Thursday and then flew to Barcelona Friday morning at about 5AM!
Barcelona- We arrived early in the morning and took the train to our hostel. The train was having problems so it took us a very long time to get there. Once we got there we dropped our luggage off and headed to the Sagrada Familia! This is a very unique cathedral created by the famous Catalonian architect Antonio Gaudi. Gaudi's work is all over Barcelona and is a big part of the city's tourist points. Then we walked to Camp Nou which is the home stadium of the FC Barcelona Futbol (soccer) team. We bought our tickets for Saturday nights game and also went to the official store to buy some memoribia. We went to a light/water fountain show at night at the main sqaure were the olympics were hosted years ago. It was beautiful. we walked all over the area at the different towers and climbed about a million stairs. Well worth it. The next day we went on a tour of the city seeing all of Gaudi's work. he was a very cool architect and is worth learning about. We also went to a Picasso museum. Picasso went to art school in Barcelona so when he died, his family donated many of his original pieces to this museum. This was awsome to see. We also saw a few original Van Gogh's! We then took a short siesta and then went to the FC Barcelona game! This game was sooo much fun. It was an awesome atmosphere and very exciting to be at. We were in the fourth row and saw everything! Barcelona won 3-0 against Racing Santander. After this we checked out some clubs hich were pretty cool and then went to bed. We got about 4 hours of sleep that night so we were pretty tired but we checked out of our hostel. We went on another tour of the city just to see the general things and some gothic architecture. We went to 3 cathedrals that day and I met up with my friend Kelsey. Kelsey goes to ASU and is in my sorority and is studying abroad in Barcelona. She hung out with us for the day and we went to Parc Guell. Its a park with any of Gaudi's work in it and it is very cooll. Many people call it park trippy because of the architecture. After that we took a very long, fun adventure to a cathedral at the top of a mountain far away and we kept seeing the whole weekend. We had to take 3 buses, 2 trolleys, an elevator, and many stairs to get there but once we got there, it was well worth the traveling. It was gorgeous and we had an amazing view of the entire city at night. After that we went to dinner and then headed to the airport at like 1am. There were 8 of us traveling together and we just decided to camp out in the airport that night cause our flight left at 6 in the morning. no one really slept because it was freezing and the ground wasnt very comfortable. after we landed in Sevilla at 7:30am this morning, we hopped a bus which broke down half way, walked 2 miles to the metro, went to school for 4 hours and then came home and slept for 6. It has been a very long day but I just wanted to update cause I know i havent done it in a while! Tomorrow my parents come and Wednesday Dave and Angie! Im very excited!
Everyone is welcome to look at all of my pictures from these two trips on Facebook. There are two albums.
Thing I miss the most: sleep
High point of the day: my nap
Low point of the day: sitting through school with only 4 hours of sleep in the last 48 hours.
Something I learned today: Bring towels and blankets to Hostels!
