Started this freezing cold, overcast morning with a slow walk with Laili and Lewa.
One thing off my wish list today and assigned to prepping the meat for the cubs and some on the lions. My god, I never known such a smell, it hits you even before the butchery doors are opened. Trying to breathe through my mouth and a deep breathe, the doors are opened and the pungent, rotting, bloody smell is gag worthy to say the least but I'm fascinated. At first trying to step over the congealed blood that has seeped through the cool room doors - the anticipation of what's behind those doors... all is revealed and there's cow, horse parts hooked up and bags of intestines, stomachs, foetus' and god knows what else but everything lions love to eat besides wild game!
Heavy duty gloves, sleeves rolled up and gum boots on, I'm ready to go. I cut through some chunk of cow through the joints and around ribs; grabbed a cows head and made him open his mouth and smile for the camera :) I'm a sick sick person and enjoying meat prep way too much!
Legs and assorted bits loaded into the trailer and off we go to the enclosures to feed the MK's and the cubs who absolutely loved their dinner.
I loved doing the meat prep, so different to anything I have ever done.
A slower paced afternoon just sitting with Laila and Lewa who really couldn't care less that we were there - they had their lunch I had fed them earlier and were full with fat bellies. Lewa laying spread eagles on her back, belly up and sleeping contently.
Knowing that the both sets of cubs had a feed I opted to do elephant herding to wind down the afternoon. There was only one handler so Bec and I were actually herding - well we/they found a bunch of bushes to eat until the handler came back. We did demonstrate our skills of deeply saying "ewa!" which the elephants apparently command to...
What a busy day and I'm all tuckered out - an early night for moi!
