Schenck Adventures
Hey everyone! Sarah here. Well, here's a quick update about our second week here. First of all, I have to tell you the funniest story about how we met our next door neighbors. Ok, first let me tell you about our house. It is so cool. It has 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a nice dining room area, kind of a wierd long narrow kitchen (but it works), a living room with couches and a tv (like any typical house), and the best part is the roof. It's crazy! People here in mexico utilize their roofs like how we in the states use decks. We hang out on the roof a lot. Our neighbors have gardens on their roofs, hang their laundry to dry up on the lines on it (yeah, I feel really domesticated washing clothes by hand and hanging them out to dry- it's not too bad though because the stuff dries fast in the sun), and some even have chicken coups up there. Anyway, so, Adam had this great idea of bringing some plastic chairs up there so we could chill and do our lesson planning, and just hang out up there. So, we tried to carry them up with us, but the doorway leading up there was too narrow. Then he thought to toss them up from this other balcony thing. Ok, sounded like a good idea right? I mean, they're just plastic, so what's the big deal? Except he didn't really think his plan out completely. He went to toss them over this wall, and instead of hearing a slight thump, we heard a crash! bang! crack! He had thrown them over the wrong wall and onto the neighbor's patio -the chairs shattered their mirror that was out there and glass was everywhere! The fall also completely broke the chairs. When it happened , the neighbors were gone, but all the other neighbors heard the noise and came running out into the street. So, there's Adam and me, speaking hardly any spanish yet trying to explain to these freaked out neighbors what happened. We finally got Edith, our roomate to come out and try to translate for us. It was terrible. But when the neighbors finally came home, they weren't mad at all and wouldn't even let us come clean up the mess we made. They were just like, oh well, accidents happen. Crazy huh? We were so worried. But that seems to be how this culture is. They are all so laid back and just go with the flow. The kids in my class are always telling me ¨don't worry teacher¨ ¨calm down teacher¨ in spanish. I think I'm a little hyper for them. Other than that, the week was great. Our classes are definately getting easier to teach as we've become more familiar with the books, and the kids are better. They're still a challenge, but we're up for it. We are so happy it's Friday today! This weekend should be a blast- some friends are taking us on a hike to this hidden famous waterfall that's here outside of town. It's supposed to just take your breath away. Then, Saturday night some other teachers (from another branch of our school that live in another town) are coming to stay with us and we're all going to go to the disco in town to dance! The weather is beautiful here- it's like 70 when we wake up, then it gets up to like 80 in the afternoon. It's the rainy season right now, so almost everyday, the clouds start rolling in around 3 or 4 and then it rains for like 2 or 3 hours and then clears up again. It's actually perfect, because it normally rains during the time we're teaching in the afternoon and stops either before we're done or shortly after. Ok, gotta go now and eat lunch. That's another thing that's really different here- the times they eat. They eat like a little breakfast right when they wake up, then almuerzo (lunch) around 11 and then the main meal of the day at like 3 or 4. Then, they just have a light dinner before bed around 8 or 9. It's actually more like a snack. Food is really cheap at restaurants and it's so good. It costs like $3 a peice (american money) to eat at a nice restaurant. A stand is only like $1 each. Ok, but I'm really hungry now, so I gotta go. Thanks for all the e-mails and messages- we'll work on reading our directions on the camera hopefully this weekend. Take care!!!! sarah
