Hi everyone! Sorry this is being updated so late...everything has been so busy recently.
So, the last I updated everyone we had just gone to Westminster Abby which was fantastic. I plan on going back on a sunday for mass (yes mom, shocker lol). But since then (about a week now) a lot has happened, and I have seen a lot of things.
Thursday night a bunch of us went out and saw Atonment at the cinema which was fun. The cinema's are fairly similar to the ones in the states, so nothing too significant to report on that front. Friday night we went out to Lester Square which is the "happening" part of town with a lot of pubs and clubs etc. We went to one called Fudge and ended up meeting some nice british boys. It was fun.
Saturday was our big full day trip to Stonehenge and the Roman Baths. Although this day was the longest on this trip so far, and we almost died multiple times due to a distracted bus driver, and I wanted to chop my ears off from a horribly annoying british tour guide, it was probably the best day I've had in the two weeks I have been here.
Stonehenge was a bit dissapointing. When you watch the travel channel or discovery channel they make it seem to be some glorious structure that has been erected from the ground, spanning across a huge landscape thats just a breath taking sight. Well, I circled the thing about three times in twenty minutes and every picture I took looked the same as the other 40 before it. While it is enormous and striking for about the first five mintues, it quickly gets old. I guess part of it has to do with the fact that the history is so ambiguious and not very well known. The history is widely speculated, which makes it hard to really appreciate what you're looking at since well...you don't know what you are looking at. All in all I was happy I got to see it, just was a little dissapointed with the whole experience.
The Roman Baths on the other hand were amazing and breath taking, and in my opinion one of the hidden treasures in the UK. The city of Bath itself is a beauty. If I could imagine up a perfect place to live, Bath would be it. It is a small city, with such a old, historic and asthetic value its hard to understand why more people don't live here. Just driving up to the city was breath taking. When we finally got to the baths, we walked around the upper part of the bath and then eventually found our way to what used to be the open aired court yard and then the downstairs of the main bath. These were the original roman baths that the romans built when they had control over europe. These were so old and still intact. Even the drainage system was still working and running. Obviously there have been updates to keep it working, but that fact that the romans were so intellectual back then is incrediable!
After the tour of the roman baths we got to walk around the city a while, and i felt so at peace and ease. Although it is a higher end town (stores like armani and paul smith) it was still fairly quiet and peaceful and had a little bit of a newtown burough feel to it. I hope to go back there again just to take more pictures and enjoy the town a bit more.
All in all the day was fabulous.
Sunday a group of us went to Camden market (combination of south street and rices but on a much grander scale). It was a lot of fun and we probably only got through about half of it before just giving up and swearing we would be back. It was amazing though, and a lot of fun. Everything in the open air, on such a gorgeous day. It was a perfect day to walk around and just look at unique and stylish clothes, art, jewelry etc.
Sunday night we went to the Thames River festival. It is a parade and weekend festival that celebrates the end of summer. It is celebrated along the river across the big ben and the london eye. It was amazing. It was a huge block party. During the parade I felt like I was at disney world with all the dancing, differnet groups celebrating their cultures, floats, masks and other decorative arts. Then the fireworks at the end of the parade just topped off the amazing night and made it so memorable. I felt like I was on vacation in disney world (except it was a lot colder lol). I also had my first crape too! Very exciting I know lol.
So...all in all it has been a very exciting and adventurous week and I have been very happy. I have been plaining on writing about my opinions on british idenity, but I think I will do that later since I am tired.
I miss all of you very much. I am quite homesick. Write me back and let me know how everything is.
Love and miss everyone!!!
Love always,
Sarah
