Hey everyone. So it's thursday, and I'm writing about the week thus far. It hasn't been too exciting. Everyone has kinda of settled down, and we arn't going to pubs as much. We are here for three months, so we do have to try and save some money. Classes are going really well. I am really enjoying my british mass media class as well as my politics class. I guess I never thought things were THAT different over here.
Yesterday (wednesday) we took a tour of Westminster Abby. It was so gorgeous. It was founded during the 10th century originaly as a Benedicitine monastery. In the 16th century, the reformation brough about many changes to the organization and worship of churches in Europe. It is in the shape of the cross, recalling the death of Jesus. Since 1066 it has been the place of the coronation for the British Kings and Queens. The last to be buried there was the Queen Mother in 2002.
Ok, so aside from that very brief history, the abby is unbelievable. You arn't allowed to take pictures inside, but I wish you could. The fact that this building is so old and is still standing, and still looks new is remarkable. I had a hard time getting over the fact that you were more or less walking over hundreds of dead bodies through out the tour. I found it to be really disrespectful. It felt like a privledge though to be able to come to the burial sites of some of the most well known, historic and profound figures of our time. I was able to stand next to the grave of Robert Browning, Geffory Chaucer, Elizabeth I and Bloody Mary. I saw Charles Darwin, Shelly and Keys, Winston Churchill, Louis Carol and Issac Newton. To think that their bodies were lieing feet below me was just something I never thought I would experience.
The Abby is something I would recomend to everyone who comes to London. It is fantastic, and and incredible sight to see.
I hope everyone is doing well back at home. I will be updating this on Sunday probably with our trip to Stonhedge and Bath. I miss everyone!! Love you all!
Love always,
Sarah
