So, the one you have all been waiting for...Oktoberfest! Although, as per with my year abroad things didn't not run smoothly to start with, but more on that later. I will keep you on the edge of your seats to find out what happened at the fest until I finish writing about the week before!
So the week before. I went for what i thought would be a quiet days shopping to PRIMARK with Vicky Cox in Frankfurt one Saturday, only to find that I was to be a hero and save the day. Kind of. We got on the U-bahn to the shopping centre, the bahn was crowded and very hot. All of a sudden Vicky went white and fainted, leaving me to push past loads of people, not knowing how to ask for help. Luckily she was only out for 10 seconds so I managed to move her off the bahn to a seat. She was ok after that...saving the day as usual though. ;) With that drama over with we went for a ncie little shop and had a good day together, it's nice having someone from home living close by!
The rest of the week I was just in school, where I took a lesson on my own, which was kind of fun, and where I semi-took a lesson all about English food and stereotypes. I felt I gave very tame sterotypes about the Germans, but this class did not hold back! Apparently we are all egoistic, have bad teeth, are fat, can't cook, are too polite and have red hair. I felt I should have been a bit ruder :P Then again, being British, it was in my nature to be polite!
So now for the bit you have all been waiting for, I hope...
I'll start with the problems and planning. The main problem was finding somewhere to stay. Because we left it so last minute there was not one bed in the whole of Bavaria left! Myself and Breanna searched all night, contacting as many people as we could, but no one had room for us to stay. So an all nighter seemed to be on the cards. However, on the train down to Munich, our luck changed, Breanna managed to get hold of what was merely an acquaintance who kindly said we could spend the night at his dad's! We finally thought things were on the up. Until Breanna got stuck in traffic and was over 2 hours late, which was fine, but then we got on a train to Freising, where we would be staying, only to find the train was delayed 2 hours due to people on the tracks. This was at gone 11pm.
The train story itself is a memorable one, the three of us sat there, sober as a nun, as the train filled with wasted Bavarians. A group of whom came to chat to us. By that I mean they wanted the pretzels we had, and one kept blowing me kisses trying to get my hat ( I bought a really cool German hat, with feathers and everything!). They definately made my evening though, and this set us up nicely for the weekend ahead.
We arrived at this guy's dad's house at 2am, the house was massive and so nice, as were the whole family, who made us a traditional Bavarian breakfast in the morning. They were so kind, so we invited the younger brother along to the fest with us. Breanna and I wore our dirndls (please google) and hats, and got on the train at 8.30am with some nice beers. We arrived and headed staright for a tent. We never thought we would get a table, but as luck has it, we found one with some Italian men on it who were happy enough to let us share. I think it was Breanna's Canadian accent that did it!
So in the tent...we all ordered a mass of beer (1 litre), met loads of amazingly cool/drunk people from all over the world, dancing and singing along to German songs and getting merry. It was one of the best experiences of my life. It was so much fun!
After around 5 hours in the tent we decided enough was enough and it was time to get food. We went for the Haxe brot, which is a pork knuckle sandwich. I chuckled at the thought of having a knuckle sandwich. We then walked around the faiir and stalls, and came across a massive statue of some woman, I forget who she was. We climbed to the top of the statue and looked out onto Munich, and it was here we could see just how many people were at the fest, tens if not hundreds of thousands. Was a spectacular view. After more shenanigans we went back to Freising and went to a traditional Bavarian restaurant and ate some gorgeous food.
The next day we said our goodbyes and headed to Munich and haad a look around for an hour or so befire our train left. Munich was amazing and I am 100% going back to see it properly!
So, that's that. An amazing weekend had by all! My next blog probably won't be until 2 weeks time, as it is half term coming up and I shall be interrailing with Salli and Richard...this is the life hey!
:-)
