On Sunday we left Wellington bright and early and got the interislander ferry over to Picton in the South Island. The ferry was surprisingly big - the same size as the ones to France, so thankfully did not make me feel sick! The views as we approached the South Island were amazing, despite the awful weather. The Magic bus met us at the Ferry Terminal and we began our drive to Nelson passing through the Malborough wine region. The next day we went to Abel Tasman which is a national park about an hour's drive from Nelson and is reported to have the second best scenery in New Zealand (after Milford Sound). We got a water taxi through the park which gave us great views of the small coves and beaches and passed split apple rock. The water taxi dropped us off at Anchorage Bay and we walked back along the coast to Marahau stopping off at all the beaches on the way. This took us about six and a half hours (with a leisurely lunch stop). The weather was beautiful, despite being really cold and the views along the way were amazing. If this really is the second best scenery in New Zealand, then I can't wait until Milford Sound!
