Saturday I went to Windsor, Stonehenge, and Bath. The first time I went to Windsor was the first week that I was here, but we weren’t allowed into the castle because there was a Royal ceremony going on. On Saturday, I got to go in the castle! It was beautiful, and HUGE. It’s the largest lived-in castle in the world. Windsor Castle is the official residence of the Queen. While we were there, we saw the state apartments and the changing of the guards ceremony.
Everyone always says that no matter how hard you try, the guards will not speak to you. Well, I must be the exception because the guard told me how “pissed” he was the night before. (British people use the word “pissed” for “drunk”) His name was Daniel, his friend told me that, he’s a guard too but he was off duty. He told me to go take a picture next to him and say “Hi, Daniel.” So I did, and he spoke to me. Magic.
Next was Stonehenge. Nobody really knows what the ancient stone circle of Stonehenge is. There is a theory that is was used for burial rituals and another theory that it was used for keeping track of time in years, but it is a mystery.
Bath was the last stop on the trip, and it is definitely my favorite place in England. The town is beautiful and there is so much history. It would be a great place to go for a relaxing weekend. Bath is home to the only hot springs in the UK, which were once occupied by the Romans. We went to the Roman Baths museum and saw where Romans once walked and bathed, on ancient stone pavement around a steaming pool. The pool smelled bad, and it was a gross sea green color that was foggy. I would not have wanted to bathe in that pool.
Today, Sunday, I went to The Beatles Museum of London and Abbey Road. The area around Abbey Road is so pretty! So many trees and expensive-looking houses. I wouldn’t mind living there.
We tried to go to Buckingham Palace, but tickets were sold out. Buckingham Palace is only open to the public 2 months out of the year, and it opened yesterday. There is an exhibit with Kate’s wedding dress, which is the talk of London right now.
When Buckingham Palace failed, we headed to the London Eye. The London Eye is a huge ferris wheel that allows you to see for miles and miles. The view was beautiful.
I can’t believe that this time next week I’ll be in Paris. Only 4 more days of work and one more day of class, then Au Revoir London, Bonjour Paris!
